The Most Important Thing YOU Can Do to Save Big Cats

Most-ImportantThis bill called the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act is the most important piece of legislation to ever be introduced to protect lions, tigers and other exotic wild cats from being kept as pets and in miserable roadside zoos. It ended the 113th Congressional session with more than 120 co sponsors.  Now we are working to re introduce the bill in January 2015.

Who is Big Cat Rescue?

Big Cat Rescue, one of the world’s largest accredited sanctuaries for exotic cats, is a leading advocate in ending the abuse of captive big cats and saving wild cats from extinction.  We are home to about 100 lions, tigers, bobcats, cougars, servals and other species most of whom have been abandoned, abused, orphaned, saved from being turned into fur coats, or retired from performing acts.

  • The sanctuary began rescuing exotic cats in Nov. 4, 1992.
  • The non profit 501 c 3 sanctuary is home to about 100 exotic big cats
  • The cats at Big Cat Rescue are here for a variety of reasons, including:
    • Abandoned by owners who wrongly thought they would make good pets
    • Abused by owners in order to force them to perform
    • Retired from performing acts
    • Saved from being slaughtered to make fur coats
    • Rescued as babies after hunters killed their mothers.  See our Bobcat Rehab and Release work
  • Big Cat Rescue has many species of cats, many of whom are threatened, endangered or extinct now in the wild, including:
    • Tigers, Lions, Leopards, Cougars, Bobcats, Lynx, Servals, Ocelots, Caracals, Jungle Cats and a Geoffroy Cat
  • The non-profit organization is:
    • Accredited by the Global Federation of Sanctuaries
    • Certified by Independent Charities of America as a “Best in America Charity”
    • Member of the World Society for Protection of Animals
    • Rated 4 Stars by Charity Navigator (their highest rating) and has one of the highest scores of any animal based charity
    • Part of a global coalition including HSUS, IFAW, WWF, GFAS, Born Free and other animal protection groups who are working together to end big cat abuse.
  • The sanctuary is situated on 67 acres in the Citrus Park area of north Tampa.

Lauren UphamShe is gorgeous! I have two moggies, my grey and white boy, Seth, who is 14, and my tortie girl Cinders, who is 4. Seth we rescued as a kitten, he and his litter mates were dumped outside the vet's office in 2001, and he crawled up into the engine bay of my parents car. And Cindi we were given after my beautiful old girl Spook died at 19, Cindi's owner had to move and couldn't have pets at the new house, so we took her.2 hours ago   ·  76

Jamie RichardsSweet Grayson offered a tough predicament to me when he was just a tiny baby. My mother found him under the foundation of my grandfather's house and I took him in. But the next day, his mother came back and was searching for him. My mother wanted to put him back for her. A part of me agreed- nobody should tear the bond between mother and kitten... But I had to think hard about this kitten's future... Should I raise him as the pet that domestic cats are meant to be, or return him to his mother to live his life as a stray, homeless, always at risk of wild animals and cars and cruel humans? I stared into those tiny blue eyes and I could not allow such a cruel future for him: never knowing love or shelter. I took in that little baby and raised him. And thankfully a woman from an organization was able to trap, spay, and mark his Mama too, but she was too wild to be a pet. Grayson has a much happier life, and is so well loved by all the older cats, and by my family. He is the naughtiest little fireball with boundless energy during the day, and at night, he needs a human or cat to cuddle with to sleep. Such a little boy he is <32 hours ago   ·  12

Adam MoreauMy best friend was ditched in a dumpster as a newborn kitten, but was luckily saved by my gf and I. 10 years later he is the best thing in my entire life and it destroys me to think that someone treated him like trash. Which also makes me sad to reflect that there are so many animals in this world that are mistreated or neglected in such awful ways, and that I can't share my compassion and desire to help and love them all. Most of my animals are all rescues, I've even got a couple feral cats who are currently residing in my garage because I can't help but to offer them shelter and a meal as often as I possibly can.2 hours ago   ·  10
Stacey CoyneI'd been feeding a stray in my backyard for a couple of months last year, and when the polar vortex rolled in I became very concerned and set up a shelter for him. I became even more concerned when he started hopping on three legs. Then winter storm Hercules happened. He always stayed just out of reach when I approached him, but I managed to trap him in the crate/shelter in the middle of the night during the storm and I brought him inside. A friend who has a small feral assistance group offered to sponsor and foster him. Sight unseen she named him Patrick and it suits him perfectly. His paw was very badly infected but fortunately the vet who thought he might have to have his toe amputated was wrong. The infection was taken care of with antibiotics, but more medical problems followed - chronic diarrhea and then urinary blockages. He ended up having to have P/U surgery and, of course, he had serious post-op bleeding and we nearly lost him. Happily, he did end up recovering and eventually the diarrhea cleared up as well. Due to state laws in Massachusetts, my friend was not permitted to foster him so he had to spend his wound-of-unknown-origin mandated six month quarantine with me. Predictably, after all we'd been through to get him healthy, Patrick and I developed a deep bond and there was no way I could part with him when the quarantine was up. Patrick is the cuddliest, most affectionate cat I've ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with. I adore him and I'm so happy that he found me and came to me for help.1 hour ago   ·  9

Dani-Marie Eileen WardMy sisters rescue cat that thought she was mine when I lived with her for three months. She slept with me in the guest room ate with me and if I went out with my sister would weave between my legs meowing till I picked her up and cuddled her when I got back. She will still meow at my voice when my sister puts me on speaker!2 hours ago   ·  6
Bruce Alan WilsonThis is Rupert. He had that name when he came to me, so I don't know why, but I like to think he was names for Rupert Grint, from the "Harry Potter" movies--what better name for a ginger boy? Your Angie is beautiful. I know that bobcats and lynxes (lynces?) are not for being made pets, the picture does make me want to reach out and stroke her behind the ear, just to feel her fur. I bet she's really soft. However, I know that it would be annoying for her and dangerous for me.2 hours ago   ·  6
Jessica TidermanWe found Selene at the park next door, barely old enough to be away from her momma, tiny and starving. She has been with us for over 2 yrs now and is obviously thriving. :-) She is the queen of the house and very lovey. Her favorite game is to chase the sunlight reflected off the refrigerator door when it is opened and closed.2 hours ago   ·  5

Amanda LongDaisy & Felix, they're total opposites but get along great (most of the time). Daisy is a scaredy cat and Felix has no fear. She'll be 2 in April and he's 3 months old. They both love cuddles and will come running if they hear the treat container. These two have totally turned me into a crazy cat lady and I don't mind at all 😊2 hours ago   ·  5
TuCorie FrantzThis is my kitty Anchovie, I got him as a rescue and he's part Maine coon.First time I saw him in his cage, he was 4 months old and when I approached him he flipped over on his back and showed me his creamy long hair belly! I knew he was mine when he greeted me! He's 21 pounds and still growing at 3 yrs old! I love him, and he's my boy!60 minutes ago   ·  4
