The Most Important Thing YOU Can Do to Save Big Cats

Most-ImportantThis bill called the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act is the most important piece of legislation to ever be introduced to protect lions, tigers and other exotic wild cats from being kept as pets and in miserable roadside zoos. It ended the 113th Congressional session with more than 120 co sponsors.  Now we are working to re introduce the bill in early 2015.

Big Cat Rescue, one of the world’s largest accredited sanctuaries for exotic cats, is a leading advocate in ending the abuse of captive big cats and saving wild cats from extinction.  We are home to about 80 lions, tigers, bobcats, cougarsservals and other species most of whom have been abandoned, abused, orphaned, saved from being turned into fur coats, or retired from performing acts.

As we give thanks this Thanksgiving, Big Cat Rescuers are especially thankful to have had the opportunity to know and love our beloved Alex tiger. On November 19th, Alex let us know he was ready to leave this earth and begin the next chapter of his journey.

In October, Alex had 3 bad canines removed. He started to recover but then seemed to relapse in mid November. When Alex stopped eating we knew we had to do something. On November 17th he was sedated and examined again by Dr. Wynn and Dr. Boorstein. The sites where his rotten teeth had been removed were mostly healed. But when they rechecked his blood work, his kidney levels were found to have increased significantly, which can cause lack of interest in food. We rolled him in the transport carrier back out to his enclosure about 10 pm. and still hoped for the best.

On November 18th, we spent all day trying to wake Alex. He couldn't stand up and was unresponsive to our pleas. We knew we had done everything possible for this 19-year-old tiger. That evening our founder Carole went to check on Alex one more time. She heard Amanda tiger and Joseph lion roaring back and forth in a haunting duet that seemed meant for Alex, who lived near them. When Carole got to Alex, he was trying to sit up. We all hoped he was rallying.

But it wasn't meant to be. Despite all of our very best efforts, Alex could not stand and his kidneys were in end stage renal failure. So on the 19th we cried our goodbyes and let him go. Be free Alex. You will always have a special place in our hearts.
