Advocat 2014 07

This month has almost too much good news to share!  It is because of people, like YOU, who speak up for the big cats that we are seeing so many good things happening for them and such a huge shift in the way people think about them.

First up in the good news Cat-egory:

The Senate had a hearing on S1381, the Big Cats and Public Safety Act, and is moving forward on the bill.  If you are new to Big Cat Rescue and our issues, this is THE MOST IMPORTANT BILL EVER to protect captive big cats from being bred for life in backyard cages.  Lend your voice here.

The Real Cost of Posing With Big Cat Cubs

Mainstream media in America is starting to listen and take note of the messages YOU help us share about tiger cub petting schemes! These two great articles denouncing tiger cub petting have been published just this week:

Ban the Use of Wild Animals in Circus Acts

adi circus ban

CIRCUS ANIMALS IN THE US NEED YOU TO TAKE ACTION THIS WEEK! Please spare just a few moments of your time to urge your Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor the bill to ban wild animal circus acts, TEAPA. We need ALL OF YOU IN THE US to send a message!

Having considered the inherent animal suffering – the constant travel, the severe restrictions on movement and the unnatural lifestyle the animals are forced to lead – 27 countries around the world banned wild, or all, animals in circuses. IT’S NOW TIME FOR THE US TO DO SO TOO!

PLEASE MAKE A DATE to contact Congress about TEAPA this week. The elephants, tigers, bears and other wild animals presently suffering in US circuses need us to speak on their behalf. WE HAVE A WEEK TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Spread the word and share this message on Facebook, Twitter, and any other way you can.

DO IT FOR THE CIRCUS ANIMALS http://bit.ly/1pe5xxx

Live outside the US? You can still support the campaign by signing and sharing our petition http://bit.ly/1s1hVDy

The Big Cat Times Summer Edition

Due to the cost of printing and mailing, you have probably noticed that you rarely get anything in the mailbox from us.  We create a quarterly, print newspaper called The Big Cat Times, but we only mail it to donors and those in our neighborhood, unless you have asked to be on that mail list.  Each quarter we post a digital copy here and the Summer edition was recently added.

If you subscribe to our website, you will never miss an update.

Annual Appeal

Canada Lynx

Because we don’t send out much direct mail for fundraising, we really do need you to help out when we do. This week we are sending out our Annual Appeal, but it only goes to existing donors, so if you have never donated, please check out this page to see why donating to Big Cat Rescue can be YOUR legacy in saving wild cats.

Credit Card Processing Savings Lower Our Costs

For years we paid a credit card processing company on a “tiered” basis where they round up the dozens of different levels of fees they pay. Recently I learned from a company called Gulf Management Systems that there is a much fairer and less expensive way to do this. The credit card processor passes on their cost with a small fixed added profit, no rounding up to increase the fees. The net for us has been a savings of thousands of dollars a year in fees.

We have used Gulf for years to do “direct debit” when supporters become Sustaining Donors and sign up to donate monthly from their checking accounts. We have also used them for direct deposit of our payroll checks. The customer service has been fantastic.

As our contract with our credit card processor came up for renewal, I asked them to review it.

When they showed me how much we had been overcharged on credit card fees because of the rounding up tiered system the banks and big merchant service companies typically use, all I could think of was how much better use we could have made of that money.

If you operate a business that takes credit cards or does direct deposit and would like to get a no cost or obligation cost comparison, contact Matt Witte at (727) 669-7644. You can save money, and help the cats because (full disclosure here!) if you mention Big Cat Rescue we get a donation from them!

Media Producer Job

All the great videos that you have seen in the past 6 years have been brought to you by Chris Poole, who started at Big Cat Rescue as an Intern.  He and his wife have decided to move to CA, so we need a new media producer.  Check out the requirements and apply here:

Top Shocking Incidents of Big Cat Exploitation – July 2014

We hope by sharing a new list with you each month that you will join us in speaking out for the big cats and cubs that are exploited across this country every day. We encourage you to take one small action today and contact one or more of the offenders below to politely express your concern. Together we can be the voice for the voiceless…together we can make a difference. If you learn of exotic cats or cubs being exploited in your area, please contact Susan.Bass@BigCatRescue.org.

Fallon Tiger Cub

White tiger cub on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in June.

No. 1 Big Cat Rescue was contacted by several of you, our awesome supporters, concerned about this white tiger cub on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last month. The handler confessed that the cub is from the Wildlife Zoological Foundation in Miami, which we believe is one of the country’s worst places for big cats.

Read a recent Mother Jones article about the founder of Wildlife Zoological Foundation here:

http://m.motherjones.com/politics/2014/05/mario-tabraue-cocaine-kingpin-lobbying-congress-big-cats

PLEASE help us educate the producers of the Tonight Show that animal lovers do not want to see tiger cubs or any exotic cats exploited to entertain viewers. Politely let the producers know you will NOT watch the show if they continue to feature big cats and cubs.

Large caged tiger being gawked at by hundreds of people in Florida. Note the man has his hand inside the cage.

No. 2 This adult tiger was displayed in a small transport cage recently in Safety Harbor (Florida) during the city’s monthly event called Third Friday. We received a number of complaints from local residents and contacted the city about the tiger. Nobody from the city responded to Big Cat Rescue.

Please let the City of Safety Harbor know that many people – not just Big Cat Rescue — do NOT want to see big cats exploited at events. It is so stressful for an exotic cat to be stuck in a small cage with nowhere to hide while hundreds of loud people gawk! Ask the city to institute a “no exotic animals” policy for city events.

No. 3 It’s difficult to convey the sheer idiocy of what happened recently at the Visitor Center at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park (California). The park had a mountain lion pelt on display, which spokesperson Daniel Williford claims “allowed for people to learn about and touch a mountain lion in a safe way.” WHAT? Certainly not safe for the mountain lion!

The pelt was recently stolen. Williford told the Press-Banner newspaper “it’s disappointing that the Visitor Center has become a place of crime.” What’s REALLY disappointing is that this state park is promoting and condoning big cat abuse in the name of “teaching the public about wildlife.”

Read the article here: http://www.pressbanner.com/view/full_story/25423951/article-Mountain-lion-pelt-stolen-from-Henry-Cowell?instance=home_news_bullets

Williford also says the Visitor Center will try to replace the pelt if someone doesn’t return the stolen one. Please help us educate this state park and the Press-Banner newspaper that visitors do NOT need to touch a dead mountain lion’s fur in order to appreciate nature! Also ask them not to replace the pelt.

No. 4 A recent Japanese animation convention called Colossolcon (Ohio) featured 30-minute “play dates” with baby tigers as part of their event. They sold Baby Tiger Passes for $150 each and sold out! Even worse, we’ve learned that this is not the first year they have had tigers and we believe they plan to do it again next June. Please email the Directors – we only know their first names – and politely explain that exploiting tiger cubs to make money is not cool and should not be part of their convention going forward.

No.5 We’ve included the Frisco family’s Bengal Tiger Encounter traveling circus act in this list before. This week the circus family has 5 adult tigers and 2 white tiger cubs at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair (Indiana). The local paper the Elkhart Truth (ironically named) ran a story quoting Felicia Frisco saying the circus act is “an educational show to raise awareness about the plight of the tiger.” Umm, no.

Please help us to educate the management of the fair, the 4-H staff and the newspaper that using big cats and cubs for entertainment is abusive and needs to end. Cats in traveling shows are usually kept in tiny transport cages for days on end, subjected to endless stress due to loud noise and people, and trained using abusive methods. This outdated mode of entertainment is cruel and unacceptable.

When to Euthanize a Tiger

ocelots Amazing GraceAt Big Cat Rescue we have a general  decision tree that we and our vets use to determine when it is time to euthanize a big cat, but every situation is different. The vast majority of the time we just aren’t sure that it is the right decision until we do the necropsy, which is the animal version of an autopsy.  The reason it is so hard to know, if we are doing the right thing, is because cats are hard wired to live the mantra of the wild; “Survival of the fittest.”  They just will not reveal their illness or their suffering until they cannot hide it any longer.

We just had two situations, back to back, where we had to make the gut wrenching decision to euthanize an exotic cat.  One was an ocelot (known in Central and South America as the Tree Tiger) and the other was an actual tiger.  Both were 20-22 years old, but their histories were so different, that the decision in each case came after painful deliberation of our veterinary care team.

An Admiration of Wildlife, A Legacy of Support

Big Cat Rescue recently received a collection of fine art wildlife prints donated by Traci and Gregg Matthews, on behalf of the estate of Mr. and Mrs. David Melville, Traci’s Grandmother and Grandfather.

Mr. Melville met his first big cat, a black leopard, in a jungle in Burma during the 2nd World War. The cat emerged to drink from a stream as he stood there watching in amazement.

Soon after, Mr. Melville began collecting the artwork of renowned wildlife artists Charles Frace’ and Guy Coheleach.

Following Mr. Melville’s passing, Traci and Gregg Matthews sought to pay tribute to her Grandfather’s legacy by donating his collection of artwork, valued at approximately $13,500, in support of an animal welfare related organization that advocated in support of the magnificent creatures he so fondly admired.

These spectacular wildlife prints, all of which include an affidavit of limited edition/ authenticity are now available for purchase, in support of the magnificent creatures that call Big Cat Rescue home:  http://www.bigcatrescue.biz/

Key Snow Leopard Habitats To Be Identified and Protected

Last October’s Global Snow Leopard Conservation Forum resulted in an unprecedented commitment from range countries and the global community to save these cats. Now, this commitment is turning into action, as experts are getting ready to define key snow leopard habitats to be protected.

Next Steps in Global Effort to Protect Cats:  Conservation experts and representatives from all 12 snow leopard range countries are meeting in Kyrgyzstan this week to identify at least 20 landscapes that can support secure snow leopard populations – and prioritize measures to protect them. An Inspiring and Heartfelt Tribute

Mike S., a Big Cat Rescue suHomelessNotHeartlessBrickpporter in Florida recently contacted the sanctuary to purchase a “Pave the Way” brick in honor of a Rick, a homeless individual that he had previously befriended.

Mike contacted the sanctuary following Rick’s tragic death, as he wanted to create a “Pave the Way” brick to ensure that his friend was “forever remembered”.

Mike first encountered Rick sitting in a parking lot with his pet dog.  Being an animal lover, Mike asked Rick if he could pet his dog, named Huckleberry.  Rick thanked Mike for asking, and introduced him to his canine companion, and the three soon became friends.

Then it dawned on Mike…how much he had and how little Rick had.  How can someone have so little, yet have so much?

To “quote” Mike, “He made me a better person, so his life was not a waste, but rather an inspiration.”

Can you imagine the stress and fear the lion much have experienced in this huge church with hundreds of worshippers? Please kindly let the Pastors know that exploiting exotic cats for “shock value” during religious services is ridiculous and potentially dangerous.

Abuse-White-tiger-Houston-Aquarium

White tiger at Houston Aquarium

No. 3 Houston television station KPRC recently did a fluff story about the white tigers at the Houston Downtown Aquarium. You read that correctly – tigers at a marine aquarium! Reporter Ruben Galvan interviewed a keeper identified as Joy about the tigers. Joy spouted facts as though white tigers would actually be found in the wild! Scary. Then reporter Galvan mentioned that he would be swimming with Beluga whales at Sea World in San Antonio the following day. So it seems to us that KPRC routinely features stories that exploit exotic animals. Please let KPRC know there are better ways to boost ratings than to promote the exploitation of white tigers and other exotics on their station. Animal lovers will tune out stations that show such a lack of disregard for these magnificent sentient creatures.

Abuse-Cougar-exhibit-college-Washington

Cougar on exhibit at a college in Washington

No. 4 Edmonds Community College (Washington) recently hosted an animal exhibit on campus that included this caged cougar and numerous other animals. A student who contacted Big Cat Rescue tells us that the cougar had no water and many students were upset to see the caged animals. The cougar was exhibited by a non-accredited outfit called Predators of the Heart, which claims to be a “refuge” for animals.

We contacted Dr. Jean Hernandez, President of the college, and explained that a refuge does not force wild animals to be on exhibit in tiny cages for hours and gawked at by hundreds of people! We also told her there is NO justification for using and abusing cougars and other exotic animals on a college campus. In fact, the exhibit sends the very wrong message to impressionable students that animals are ours to exploit as we wish. It can even encourage people to think they make good pets and purchase these cats themselves. Dr. Hernandez never responded to our emails.

Would you politely reach out to Dr. Hernandez and let her know big cat lovers do not want to see cougars on college campuses? Email her at jean.hernandez@edcc.edu

No. 5 97.5 WABD (Alabama) had promoted tiger cub handling on their Facebook page recently showing staff members with cubs used for cub petting at the notorious Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. The station was even encouraging their fans to pay to interact with the cubs, but once they heard from YOU, they pulled the photo from their page.

What’s Up With Cameron’s Mane?

Cameron Lion Short Mane

If you’ve ever been on a tour of the sanctuary, you’ve probably heard about how we gave Cameron the lion a vasectomy when he arrived so that he and the love of his life, Zabu, would be able to live together without bringing more cubs into captivity.  It was a great launching point to talk about why it is so bad to cross breed animals, like ligers, and to educate our guests about how the lion’s mane is a testosterone driven sign of his virility.   For a long time we all enjoyed the best of both worlds; a situation where there were be no cubs born and Cameron would sport his magnificent mane…but the older Cameron got the more threatened he became of anyone who even looked at Zabu.

There weren’t any lions or tigers in the area around Cameron and Zabu, so he took to angrily lashing out at the leopards next door, his keepers and the guests.  We couldn’t find any other cause for Cameron being so stressed out and decided to neuter him and see if that would help.  We knew that neutering him would mean that he would lose that enviable mane over time, but if he had been any other sort of cat, we would have done the same thing, so that they could relax and not have all those hormones raging through their system.

Cameron is losing his mane and eventually will look more like a lioness, but love is blind and Zabu doesn’t seem to care.  Come summer, Joseph may be asking what he has to do to get that more sporty, sleek look as well.

Saving Lions Thanks to YOU!

Last month’s March for Lions may have just seemed like one heck of a party, but thanks to everyone who came and fundraised for the event, we were able to net $10,000 and we wanted to spend it on ways to help lions outside our gates.   The movers and shakers behind the Global March for Lions were Chris and Bev Mercer of CannedLion.org.  Any time we need the truth on what is happening in Africa regarding lions, we always turn to Chris and Bev.  They have been the leading force against lion hunting and pay to play schemes that pimp out lion cubs, only to sell them into canned hunts as easy targets.  They would never ask for help, but this event made it possible for us to contribute $7,000. to their continued efforts to ban lion hunting.  Chris said this is the equivalent of a small fortune in his world and that he will put it to good use in protecting lions.

We were impressed with Nat Geo’s Cause an Uproar campaign and donated $1,000. to their BuildABoma.org project.  This will build two bomas to help protect lions from being killed for harming livestock.

We have long been impressed by Animal Defenders International because they are a small organization that has been winning huge victories for animals.  What really brought them up on our radar was the amazing work they have done in the past few years to ban circus acts that use wild animals in 20 + countries.  If you saw Blackfish and thought, “big cats need a movie like that,” then you have to see Lion Ark.  We saw it and were so enamored that we sent $1,100. to help with their efforts to free all big cats from circuses.

Before the March for Lions even began we sent the early money we raised, in the amount of $900. to Walking for Lions to be a major sponsor for the cycling event from Kenya to Botswana to raise awareness of the plight of lions.  So, thanks to your generosity we are raising awareness, supporting boots on the ground, giving locals a way to live with lions, rescuing lions from circuses and letting everyone know that when you pay to play with a cub, the cub is always the one who pays with his loss of life and liberty.

Stunned Grief Over the Loss of Two Cats

We never saw it coming, so losing Mr. E the little Leopard Cat and China Doll the grande dame of Big Cat Rescue just days apart has us reeling.  At least, with Mr. E., he was reported on the Observation Charts several times as drinking more water than usual.  Except for these reports, he had never been sick a day in his life.  Drinking a lot usually an indicator of renal disease and at 14 had lived much longer than most Amurian Leopard Cats do, but to us that seemed like such a young age.

ChinaTiger2013FB

As for China Doll, she had been here since 1995 and the only time she had ever been treated for anything was a small cut on her tail back in 2006. She had been the picture of health and we were all wondering how she was going to manage now that Shere Khan is looking so old and frail. She’s older than him, but you would never know it. She’s just always been one exuberant girl and last Tuesday night was like any other.

She had just eaten dinner when Jamie walked up to check on Khan. China Doll was standing near her lock out, when Jamie reported that she began hobbling backwards towards the treeline in her 2 acre enclosure, on just three legs. She began breathing hard, her pupils were dilated and she had several episodes where she would bob her head, walk a few steps, fall to the side and then paw and bite at the ground . She couldn’t seem to use her front leg at all. China Doll had everyone holding their breath when she managed to get out into the lake and continued to have repeated episodes that threatened her with every jerk backwards to drown her.

Barbara Frank reported, “China Doll would have drowned out there if keepers hadn’t been able to call her back in to the shore.”

The next 24 hours were stressful for everyone involved as they tried to figure out a way to confine China Doll in a small enough area so she could be sedated and examined. She couldn’t be sedated in the large enclosure for fear that she would return to the lake and drown, but she wouldn’t come into the lock out area either. At one point Jamie and Gale tried to build a small cage around her while she slept in the corner of the enclosure, but she got up and moved away seconds before a fence panel could be lowered around her using pulley ropes.

Finally China Doll entered her feeding lock out for a drink and Dr. Justin was able to sedate her, draw blood and examine the leg for wounds or a break. Blood pressure readings confirmed suspicions that she had most likely had a blood clot in the limb. Blood clots such as these are usually the result of heart disease and can happen suddenly and with out warning. The wrist and paw of the affected limb was cool to the touch and the blood pressure readings were quite low. It seemed as though the paw was not getting blood flow.

China Doll was give pain medication and kept under close observation in a smaller roofed enclosure connected to her big yard. Four days passed and she wouldn’t eat and would barely drink. Because she would not eat, she was not getting the much needed pain relief and therefore had to be darted to receive medication. She seemed to be blind but it may have been brain damage that just made her lack the coordination to move about or respond. It was a heart breaking series of days and her condition was not improving. On Saturday Dr. Wynn came out helped put an end to her suffering.

Please help us to take care of these aging cats by donating to our medical fund: http://www.razoo.com/story/Medical

We don’t want our volunteers to find out about cat deaths on social sites, where they are going to have fun, so please do not post China Doll’s passing until 4/19 to give everyone at Big Cat Rescue the chance to find out here, among friends, first.  Thank you.

New Book Explores Human – Cougar Relationships

Cougar by Paula Wild CoverThroughout history cougars have been feared and revered, persecuted and protected.

Paula Wild explores our evolving relationship with this enigmatic predator from past to present in her new book, The Cougar: Beautiful, Wild and Dangerous.

Combining natural history, scientific research and first-person accounts, Wild describes the cougar’s biology, lifestyle and behavior, as well as the most up-to-date information on cougar awareness and defense. Through in-depth research, she examines how peoples’ perceptions impact cougar populations and how cougar populations affect the environment. And, with the help of experts like Carole Baskin, founder and CEO of Big Cat Rescue, she delves into the plight of captive cougars and the need for better legislation to protect them.

Paula Wild is an award-winning author of four books and has written more than 1,000 articles for numerous periodicals, including Beautiful British Columbia, Reader’s Digest and Canada’s History Magazine. She lives in Canada on Vancouver Island, the cougar capital of the world.

Sad Farewell to Three Beloved Animals

Banjo the Bearcat  was a rather astonishing 23 years old when his poor old body just couldn’t get him around his enclosure any more.  We know cats, and don’t take in animals other than cats any more, because we feel like it’s hard enough to know everything we need to know about one kind of animal.  From all the experts we talked to about Banjo, they said the longest we could expect a binturong to live would be 15 years, so we think he had a pretty good run by living to be 23.

Cleo Cat Tra the Serval was “only” 17 but that is our average age for servals.  She was in renal failure and went down very quickly.  The cats usually let us know when it’s over, so we helped her pass on without having to suffer.

Nyla the Leopard was 19 and just had a wonderful “vacation” with her brother, Simba in the Vacation Rotation enclosure.  We wanted them to get some time out there because we feel like Simba is in his final days, so we were stunned that Nyla’s health began to fail so quickly.  She was euthanized as she was in late stages of renal failure and during the necropsy we discovered she was suffering from pancreatitis which caused the hastening of the downward spiral.

Nyla Leopard On Vacation 2014

It has been a very difficult year for all of us who love these animals and right now 24 of our cats are over the age of 20 (when they usually don’t live into their teens any where else) so we know there are some heartaches ahead.

West Virginia Bans Private Possession of Wild Animals!

Gov. Tomblin has signed a bill into law to prohibit the private possession of dangerous wild animals. Introduced by Del. Randy Swartzmiller (D-1), HB 4393 passed the House by a vote of 72 to 23, and the Senate by a 22 to 11 vote.

Your Roars Were Heard!

In our August 2013 Advocat e-newsletter, we asked you to let government officials in Ventura County, California know they should not approve a permit request by tiger merchant Irena Hauser, who owns 5 white tigers, to house them in a residential area of Malibu. Hauser exploits the tigers in the movie industry and transports them for filming purposes. Last week the Ventura County Planning Commissioners rejected Hauser’s request for a permit!! Washington’s Trophy Hunting Bill is Dead!

Washington state Senators Brian Dansel and Don Benton authored a bill to force the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to allow trophy hunters to use hounds to kill cougars for fun.  The bill died in the Senate so Washington’s cougars and hounds can sleep a little safer. To everyone who shared the alert and contacted legislators: Thank you for helping us stop this cruel and unnecessary legislation!

Top Shocking Incidents of Big Cat Exploitation

We hope by sharing a new list with you each month that you will join us in speaking out for the big cats and cubs that are exploited across this country every day. We encourage you to take one small action today and reach out via phone or email to contact one or more of the offenders listed below and politely express your concern. Together we can be the voice for the voiceless…together we can make a difference. Please join us in our mission of Caring for Cats & Ending the Trade. If you learn of exotic cats or cubs being exploited in your area, please contact Susan Bass at Susan.Bass@BigCatRescue.org.

More than 3,000 Big Cat Rescue supporters spoke up for this poor cub being exploited at the Florida State Fair

Tiger Cub Exhausted Florida State Fair 2014

No. 1 Last month, the Florida State Fair (Tampa) hosted an exhibit called Jungle Habitat that was exploiting a 4-month-old tiger cub named Takara (photo above). She was living in a dog carrier inside a tiny cage all 11 days of the fair. For $20, up to 6 people at a time could enter her cage to take photos and pet her.

When Big Cat Rescue heard about the situation, we contacted Florida State Fair management.

We also went to the fair to check out the exhibit and tiger cub ourselves, since this abuse was happening right in our own backyard.

We were appalled at the condition of the tiger cub. She clearly seemed drugged; her behavior was well beyond sleepiness or lethargy. When the handler pulled her out of the dog carrier and placed her on top of it, she barely opened her eyes. One of our people is a veterinary technician and it was also her professional opinion that the cub was drugged. We were within inches of the cub and she was able to evaluate the cub’s eyes and behavior. There were also several spots of diarrhea in the sawdust surrounding the cub’s cage. An adult lynx was separately confined to a very small cage.

Amazingly, when the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) sent an officer to the fair to investigate, the officer reported the exhibitor was “appropriately licensed” and the cub “appeared well adjusted to public contact.” WHAT??

So many of you were outraged by the response from the FWC. We are too. This is why we are fighting SO hard for Federal legislation that would ban cub petting at these roadside zoos and fair exhibits. Please visit www.StopBigCatAbuse.com to ask your representatives in Congress to co-sponsor and support the Big Cats & Public Safety Protection Act.

Sadly, little Takara was exploited again in March at the Lee County Fair (Florida) and the Collier County Fair (Florida), where she was subjected to gawking and petting by hundreds of strangers.

If you’d like to add your voice in support of this cub, we’ve made it easy to contact FWC, USDA and the Florida State Fair here: http://salsa4.salsalabs.com/o/51389/p/salsa/web/blog/public/?blog_KEY=31

No. 2 Dirk Arthur’s Wild Magic show, a circus act featured at two Harrah’s casinos in Nevada, was recently cited by USDA for multiple violations of the Animal Welfare Act. Dirk Arthur was cited for forcing two tigers and a lion to undergo painful declawing procedures in violation of a long-standing USDA policy, confining a snow leopard to a rusty and unsound enclosure, subjecting a bobcat to conditions that presented “a clear hazard” to the animal’s safety, failing to use adequate barriers to protect the cats and the public, and denying the animals the opportunity to exercise or even adequate space to make normal postural adjustments.

Big Cat Rescue joins PETA in asking Caesar’s Entertainment Group, which hired Dirk Arthur’s act, to NOT let the show go on. Caesars should join the growing list of companies – including Simon Property Group, Inc., the largest real estate holding company in the U.S. – that have made a commitment to hiring entertainment acts that don’t exploit exotic, endangered animals.

Please ask Caesars and Harrah’s management to end the partnership with Arthur and urge Caesars to commit to only hiring entertainment acts that do not include big cats and other exotic animals. Email Caesar’s management here:

No. 3 A CBS television station in Washington aired an interview recently promoting an exhibitor with a tiger cub petting scheme at a local outdoor expo. Photos of the cub with the reporter are also posted on the station’s Facebook page. The video shows the handler continuously bouncing the cub in the air for several minutes to keep it quiet. The cub cries out repeatedly. Please politely let KEPR-TV reporter Abby Acone and her news director Robin Wojtanik know that their station should not be promoting and condoning the abuse of this cub!

Tiger cubs should not be exploited for profit and used as entertainment. And they certainly should not be bounced around like a rag doll. Email them here:

American Exotic

Want to support a TV series that will educate a huge audience about the REAL issues involved in the private ownership of big cats and other animals?

The biggest challenge we face here at Big Cat Rescue in the battle to stop big cat abuse is educating people. Most people have no clue that thousands of exotic animals live in miserable conditions under current laws. The phrase we here most often when we tell people on our tours about big cat issues is, “I had no idea!”

When award-winning director Michael Webber created the documentary Elephant in the Living Room (“Elephant”), he showed the real story of exotic animal ownership. Elephant won 5 Best Documentary awards and became the #1 Independent Film in the nation for three weeks in a row – remaining in the Top 10 for nearly a year.

Michael Webber has now created a TV series along the lines of Elephant. It will be a great next step in getting the message out about big cats and private ownership to the American public!

The first six episodes have been in production for over 3 years. To raise funds to finish those episodes, he is now posting the project on Kickstarter, a website that allows YOU to become part of the project and make the series a reality!

By funding this privately instead of through a cable network we can keep the content pure so the real message stays intact.

Every donation helps. Even $5 dollars. If you are interesting in being part of this (you can say you funded a cable TV series!), visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/michaelwebber/american-exotic-with-tim-harrison.

Rock to the Rescue

A ROARING time was enjoyed by all as Big Cat Rescue volunteers teamed up with Ms. Hannah Shaw, Director of “Rock to the Rescue” for an exciting Big Cat fundraising/public awareness event that took place as part of the 2014 Plant City Strawberry Festival.

“Rock to the Rescue” is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded by classic-rock band STYX, whose mission is to build strong, healthy communities through the support of grassroots organizations across the country.

This is the second time that Big Cat Rescue has teamed up with “Rock to the Rescue”, collectively raising $4000.00 in support of the magnificent creatures that call the sanctuary home.

Styx Rock To The Rescue

Rock to the Rescue is a project founded on the principle that our communities are stronger when we work together in mutual aid. Having played over 1500 shows in the last 14 years, STYX has been strongly connected with communities across the country. At each tour date, Rock to the Rescue partners with a local group to give back to the community through outreach, fundraising, and volunteer support. What makes Rock to the Rescue so unique is that they work on a grassroots level with small groups, giving real support to real individuals who are creating positive changes in their communities. Rock to the Rescue is building initiatives in the areas of music education, animal welfare, and health and well-being.

Sad Farewell to Three Beloved Cats

2014 has been a hard year so far as we have lost three of our beloved cats.  Flavio the tiger died at the record breaking age of 25 years.  Sasha the lioness died during a rather routine surgery, but we discovered in the necropsy that her lungs were riddled with cancer and then we lost Precious the bobcat. She had been through so much, and we did all we could for her, but a massive seizure let us know that it was time to let her go.  You can read the tributes to these cats at the links above.

Big Cat Rescue Teaching in the Field

LaWanna makes big cat trading cards, with our logos and URLs and then provides them to schools for free to use as incentives with their students.  Check out this nice report from the Community Coordinator:  “York Elementary will be using the animal trading cards as part of their ongoing efforts to improve their school attendance. York has struggled over the past several years and now, under new leadership, they are excited to try new approaches at solving their ongoing attendance issues. They have already made great strides, by being the elementary school with the highest percentage of increase in attendance, but they are still significantly below the district average.

The Trading Card Initiative will by far be the biggest ongoing attendance program and we hope to create a lot of excitement around all the different animals. Students will be able to earn one card per week for the remainder of the school year and the program will continue next year as well. Each student will have their own folder with card holders to stash their collection and we feel that they will encourage each other to be at school everyday so they will have more cards to trade.  Our kick-off is next week and we will keep you posted on the success!” – Pauletta

Big Cat Books

Big Cat Care Book CoverLaWanna Mitchell is an amazing woman.  She started out as a volunteer and became a remote contractor for us years ago.  She lives in Missouri, out in the country with her horses, and I get emails from her telling me that she just spent the last two hours, up on a step ladder with a blow dryer trying to melt the ice off her antenna because she doesn’t want to lose another day of working online.  On those days when she is just completely snowed in, she just can’t stop working and has taught herself how to build books in iBooks for iTunes and for Amazon.

She has a number of books published there now, including titles such as China Doll Loves Pumpkins, The Elusive Sand Cat, Meet JoJo, The Black Footed Cat, Shaquille’s Shattered Dreams, What Do You See?, The Tigrina or Oncila, and the first of a two part series called Big Cat Care – How to Start a Sanctuary.

This book is for those running a sanctuary who want to learn from our experience, or for those who have already made the mistake of supporting the pet trade so that the animal in your care does not suffer even more after being ripped from his mother. With more than 30 years experience, with every sort of exotic cat, I can assure you that there is nothing you can do to raise up an exotic cat to be a house pet. It just isn’t possible. No matter how young you neuter or spay the cats, both male and female, ALWAYS spray when they become adults.

Look for all of the titles above as More by Big Cat Rescue when you check out, Big Cat Care – How to Start a Sanctuary by me, Carole Baskin, in iTunes

Ford Tiger Abuse

No. 1 Ford Motor Company aired a commercial during the Super Bowl featuring a live adult tiger with actor James Franco. Ford tells us that the tiger was “properly treated” during filming. And to make matters worse, they now have a SECOND ad featuring an adult leopard! Please politely let Ford know they are missing the point – the very fact that these cats are bred to be used in movies and commercials is abusive. Ford would likely be appalled if they knew how big cats are kept when they aren’t on set. Animal lovers do NOT want to see them exploited for entertainment and profit. Tweet using #nearlydouble at http://twitter.com/Ford and post Facebook comments at https://www.facebook.com/ford.

No. 2 On February 15th the Myrtle Beach Marathon (South Carolina) will again be a willing participant in the exploitation of tiger cubs as it teams up with one of the country’s most prolific breeders and exhibitors of exotic cats, Bhagavan Antle and his T.I.G.E.R.S. facility. Big Cat Rescue tried to educate the president of the marathon and its board of directors about the extensive breeding and cub petting this facility does. We explained that Antle has decades of animal care citations and investigations dating all the way back to 1989. Antle claims his “Rare Species Fund” contributes to wildlife conservation, but Rare Species Fund does not even appear to be a non-profit registered with the IRS. Please ask the organizers of the Myrtle Beach Marathon to stop exploiting tiger cubs and cancel the cub display during their marathon. Contact Shaun Walsh at shaun.walsh@edwardjones.com and 843-238-3343. Contact Bill Stanton at billstanton@sc.rr.com and 843-233-8088.

No. 3 Animal handler Dave Salmoni brought two lion cubs onto the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on January 31st. He used the guise many breeders and exhibitors of big cats use: seeming to care about big cats in the wild all the while exploiting captive cubs on television! The cubs were clearly stressed and not under the direct control of Salmoni, which we believe is a violation of the Animal Welfare Act. To make matters worse, it appears that the cubs actually belonged to Serenity Springs, which is being sued by USDA for Animal Welfare Violations! Please urge NBC and the new producers of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (which starts this month) to stop having big cat cubs on the program and place the wellbeing of the cats above profits and ratings. Click here and then scroll down to open the “select show” box to leave your comments: http://www.nbc.com/contact/general

No. 4 Live in the state of Washington or know someone who does? Our friends at the Mountain Lion Foundation need your help to stop a Washington state Senate bill from passing that would FORCE the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to allow trophy hunters to use hounds to kill cougars for fun. Please help stop this cruel and unnecessary bill!

No. 5 Did you know that the USDA has a new online form for reporting animal abuse? If you see abuse of any animals at USDA licensed facilities, you can now quickly and easily let USDA know and urge them to immediately send an inspector out to inspect the facility. Find the form here: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/aw_complaint_form.shtml
