Male Siberian Tiger
Nik, short for Nikita, is a very large tiger comparable in size to the massive Shere Khan. He is very shy and spends most of his time napping by the lake.
When Nik first arrived, he was very elusive and would often hide in his den when keepers approached his enclosure. Gradually he became more and more curious about the new people in his life and would peer out the doorway to the den and watch everyone very closely.
He has now warmed Read More
Rescue of Narla the Cougar:
This is a letter from someone who knew the Loppi's. This person below, wanted us to know that Rob was well intended and I post it here as an example of how even the best intentions usually end up bad for the exotic animal.
According to a number of emails I got after the fact, Rob's wife was looking to euthanize the cat, but Rob's friends, family and the media were on her case and she couldn't do it without Read More
Simba is a male Asian spotted leopard born on 6/6/94. He came to Big Cat Rescue on 8/4/94 with his sister, Nyla, as a bottle fed baby. Simba had the misfortune of being born the wrong sex. Backyard breeders always want more females than males. Since his sister Nyla was cross eyed, he was not a good candidate for breeding and was unwanted.
Seeing what a beautiful leopard he has grown up to be, we are fortunate that we were able to take him in to save him from a long life Read More
Sabre was 3 years old when he arrived at Big Cat Rescue on 7/20/95. Though he was only supposed to be here temporarily, his former owner moved and left no forwarding address.
This could have been another sad ending as most are in the exotic pet world. Luckily, we had taken Sabre in and he will have a home here for life. He is very playful and fun loving and always has a mischievous look on his face. He loves to act very silly, running about his cat-a-tat and jumping on Read More
Arrived at Big Cat Rescue 1/1/02
Reno is a very agile, golden spotted leopard who arrived at Big Cat Rescue in 2002 at the age of 7. Reno was a circus performer trained to ride around the ring in a chariot behind a horse. When the act was cancelled, he found himself unemployed. With no hunting skills and no idea of how to even climb a tree, he had zero chance of being released to the wild.
Fortunately, instead of being sold to a canned hunt or roadside zoo like many out-of-work circus animals, Read More
Male Siberian/Bengal Tiger Hybrid
TJ is the youngest of the four tigers and has the personality to prove it. He is more playful than the rest and loves to crash through all of the high grasses in his enclosure. TJ was rescued from Savage Kingdom.

Meet Jo Jo the Caracal Serval Hybrid
I first met JoJo the Caracal / Serval hybrid at the South Florida Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in 2005 after a hurricane had taken down the perimeter fencing and dumped piles of deadfall on the cages.
The owner, Dirk Neugebohm, had ended up in the hospital with a heart attack from trying to clean the mess up by himself.
He wrote from what he thought was his deathbed back then to anyone and everyone he could think of asking for help; and asking for help was not something Read More
Male Canada lynx
Gilligan's age is unknown. He was purchased along with Skipper at an auction.
Gilligan had the tiniest cage measuring 5' x 7'. It was also the dirtiest of all of the cages. The mud floor was not mud, but feces covered with a sprinkling of straw. It appeared as though Gilligan had tried to keep much of his waste confined to one area on top of his plastic dog house. He had perched atop the house day after day to defecate. The large pile of feces cascaded out of the side Read More
Precious came to Easy Street from an auction when she was about six months old. She is a Texas Bobcat, which is the most dramatically spotted variety. She lived in the house for a while, but she was never house broken and never trusted people. She seems happiest to have people keep their distance and admire her from afar. She shared a 900 square foot Cat-A-Tat with Shiloh and Indian Summer for many years and then, one day, they decided they didn't like her anymore and Read More
Freckles the Liger
DOB 1/1/93 -7/5/2011
Arrived at Big Cat Rescue 12/19/2008
Most ligers suffer from a condition called Giganticism where they grow to over a 1,000 lbs in the first couple years of life.
Since it is un natural for lions and tigers to cross breed (being that they are typically not on the same continent) the cubs are usually too large for the mother to deliver without a c-section and they die very young from a multitude of birth defects and due to the rapid growth.
Freckles only weighs about the same as a lion and Read More
