Big Cat Rescue Video of Modnic the Tiger

Modnic a female tiger who was rescued in 2007 from Savage Kingdom in Florida, undergoes surgery to remove cancerous tumors. (*Some graphic scenes of surgery are shown)

Savage Kingdom was a breeding facility in Florida that was closed down by the USDA in 2006. Modnic along with three other tigers, TJ, Bella and her sister Trucha were rescued by Big Cat Rescue. Savage Kingdom was featured in an episode of Animal Planet’s “Fatal Attractions” in 2011, documenting the attacks by tigers on workers at the facility.

No More “Florida Panther Cub” Exploitation at Florida Panther Games

One of our AdvoCats named Denise contacted us last week because she was distressed that some back yard breeder type was taking a cougar cub (trying to pass it off as a Florida Panther) to a Florida Panther hockey game.  The people with the cougar cub were treating her as if she were a pet and letting some people pet her at their booth.  That is only legal between the ages of 8-12 weeks, but it is nearly impossible for inspectors to determine the ages of cubs and we often see the same cubs, week after week after week, who are being presented as being the same age each week.

In addition to this kind of exposure being dangerous to the health of the cub, who doesn’t get all of their shots until 12 weeks and dangerous to the public because they can’t get their rabies vaccination until 16 weeks, it sends the worst possible message.  No matter what the person holding the cub or leash is telling people; if they see a big cat being handled as if it were a pet, they get the message that cougars make cool pets.  Thankfully enough people complained to the Florida Panthers Hockey team that they said they, “aren’t working with them anymore, and there will be no more discussion about it!”   So apparently they got considerable flack for this lapse in judgment because not only do they not want to work with the cougar exploiters, they don’t even want to talk about it!

Battle of the Barristers

The Stetson Law Students who are interested in Animal Law came to Big Cat Rescue and helped us paint barricades and helped us tear down an old cage that we will turn into new barricades.  Just the wire that we are able to recycle will save us $600. and we will use it to bring the tour path down between Cameron the Lion and Zabu the White Tiger and the two Leopard sisters, Jade and Armani.

Today at Big Cat Rescue Sept 11

Today was the 10th year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America that changed things for all of us forever.  9/11/2001 is the day that nearly brought an end to our sanctuary because tourism stopped.  Donations were all (rightfully) diverted to the human tragedies that were unfolding on television and the Internet. We were down to our last $20,000 with an annual budget that was nearly half a million dollars and we could not see any end to the terror that had people frozen in front of their T.V. sets.  I sold my car, jewelry and everything that had any value that we could spare to keep the cats fed.  But more importantly, that sad day and time marks a change in the way I thought.

Everyone was focusing on the bad so they didn’t need my help with that.  I began to focus on all of our strengths and what we could do better than anyone else in the world.  I put a huge decal on my truck that said, “Buy, Fly, Pray and Play” and wouldn’t tolerate any doomsday talk.  I only wanted to be surrounded by those who could think positively, who could plan and achieve a bright future and who were ready to do whatever it took to ensure the long term care of the 100+ big cats who were depending on us.  Big Cat Rescue is a team of the best and brightest in the business and 10 years after that awful year in our nation’s history we have been name Best in the Biz by voters.  If you are a part of our team; if you are a donor; if you are someone who shares the plight of captive cats with your friends; if you are reading this page and care; then it is only because of you that these magnificent cats have found peace in a war torn world.  It is because of you that we can give them a permanent sanctuary.

Big Cat Rescue wins the People’s Choice Award for the 3rd year in a row!  The People’s Choice Award was likened to the American Idol of the Non Profit World by host Jack Harris at the WEDU event on Jan. 15, 2009.  This was an online voting contest that resulted in more than 50,000 votes cast for 90 non profits in a 16 county viewing area.  Thanks to all of our wonderful supporters, Big Cat Rescue was voted the People’s Choice in 2006, 2007 and 2008!
