Tiger cub trio at Palm Beach Zoo

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. —  The three Malayan tiger cubs make an appearance while they are busy exploring the their new habitat at the Palm Beach Zoo. The whole time their mother Barapi, keeping a close eye on them.

“She has a couple of roles. One is she is the protector. You can hear her in the background vocalizing. She’s keeping an eye on the cubs at all times. She’ll leave them for short periods of time but she always knows where those cubs are,” said Keith Lovett, Assistant Zoo Director.

The Palm Beach zoo has a strict hands off policy. Zoo keepers never go in with the big cats and never handle them.

The two-month old cubs are eating a little meat, but still nursing several times a day. Their father Rimba, did his duty and now he is done.

“In the wild, male and female tigers come together to breed and the male goes off on his own. He has no involvement with the raising of the cubs whatsoever, so Rimba, he is separated from the cubs at all times because truthfully, he would harm the cubs if he was ever introduced to them,” said Lovett.

The three rare cubs are only the second Malayan tiger litter born in an American zoo this year.
