2 charged with importing dead tiger

Two Hercules residents have been charged in federal court with illegally importing a mounted tiger from Vietnam, court records show.

Steven Tieu, also known as Coung Tieu, imported a real mounted tiger – an endangered species – from Vietnam in December without the proper permits or declarations, federal prosecutors said in documents filed in U.S. District Court in Oakland.

Tieu was charged Friday with a misdemeanor violation of the Endangered Species Act.

Nicki Phung, also known as Mai Thi Phung, was charged with smuggling the mounted tiger, which is a felony.

Both are to be arraigned Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Wayne Brazil in Oakland.
