DENVER – A 3-year-old Siberian tiger from Connecticut is now on public exhibit at the Denver Zoo, seven months after arriving as part of a plan to ensure the species’ survival.

The tiger, named Koshka (KOOSH’-kuh), arrived in December from Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, Conn. Denver Zoo spokeswoman Tiffany Barnhart says the female tiger was brought to Colorado in hopes she would mate with the zoo’s 5-year-old male, Waldemere.

Koshka was kept isolated during what the zoo calls a standard quarantine period, but was recently placed on exhibit for the public to view. Barnhart says Koshka hasn’t yet been introduced to Waldemere.

Officials say there are less than 400 Siberian tigers remaining in the wild, and the species is classified as critically endangered.
