Amur leopard gets root canal at Utah zoo

Rare leopard gets a root canal

February 13th, 2010 @ 11:19pm

SALT LAKE CITY — We all need to go to the dentist once in a while, and it is no different for the animals at Hogle Zoo.

Valdamere, Hogle Zoo’s Amur leopard, had a root canal done Saturday morning. It was the first major medical procedure at the zoo’s new animal hospital.

The procedure was performed by a veterinarian from Denver who specializes in the teeth of exotic animals.

Holly Braithwaite of Hogle Zoo said, “If you ever had a root canal, you sure feel better after having the root canal; so we expect he will recover very nicely.”

That’s a really good thing for the zoo because Valdamere is of a very rare breed. There are only about 40 Amur leopards in the wild and 70 in North American zoos.
