Keeper Corner

Keeper Mary Lou:  Divinity and Apache prefer drinking from the same water bowl, even if it means waiting in line

…. or not.

Meet Apache:  Date of Birth: 5/5/95

Apache came to Big Cat Rescue on June 6,1995. His previous owner saw him urinate on the carpet and decided that having a bobcat as a pet was not the best idea. Apache looks very different from the other bobcats he lives with, his coat is very light and his eyes are blue-gray.

Apache LOVES spice bags.

Meet Divinity:  Date of Birth 5/30/95

Divinity was sold from a fur farmer to an individual, along with an unrelated mate, Takoma, when she was only a few days old. She was bottle raised for three weeks before the new owner had a heart attack and could no longer care for the kitten. The woman had seen our video and knew that Big Cat Rescue could love and care for her little ones and we have.

Divinity’s color is almost silver and her disposition is pure gold. She was so tiny and frail when she arrived that there were many nights we thought would be her last, but she wouldn’t give up. She was always a nervous little cat and couldn’t sit still for more than two minutes at a time.

You may notice that her feet are very floppy looking. That is from a botched declaw job as a kitten. Cats walk on their toes and declawing hacks off the last digit of their toes so that they are forced to walk on their heels. As they age, that becomes harder and harder for them to do.

Apache & Divinity as Kittens:  Big Cat Rescue opposes the exotic pet trade. This video was taken of 22 kittens who were rescued from a Fur Farm in 1995. They had to be hand raised and that is why they are inside in some of the shots. The lion cubs, Mufasa and Sarabi, had been rescued from owners who were so stoned they were trying to force the cubs to drink curdled milk. These kittens were cute, but not one of them could be handled later in life because they grow up to be wild animals.

Note to Viewers:  This is a VERY OLD VIDEO – We would do thing differently, if we had known then what we know now.

Arthur is on Joseph’s Selfie Cam

Arthur is in Joseph’s enclosure while Joseph is on vacation.  He is having a great time marking everything that smells like Joseph.  Can you imgine how busy Joseph is going to be re-marking everything when he comes home from vacation.  The enclosure has 5 sections and each section is about 1800 sq. ft.  Shew that will be a LOT of re-marking to do.  Joseph with be quite busy, just as Arthur stays busy now marking everything as his.

Arthur’s siblings, Amanda and Andre are right next door so they can still see each other.  We are hoping that giving him his own space for a bit will mean he is less stressed and will begin eating more again.  Although, when he is with his siblings we do separate them for mealtime.  But this allow him to be further away from them so he does not have to see them during mealtime.  His siblings get pretty wild around mealtime.

You can watch Arthur on Joseph’s web cam.
