Big Cat Updates
What is the Call of the Wild?
The Call of the Wild is a call to leave a message for lawmakers asking them to champion The Big Cat Public Safety Act. It takes only a minute and you will more than likely be speaking to an answering machine.
Big Cat Rescue’s bill to end big cat abuse has been introduced in Congress! The Big Cat Public Safety Act (H.R.1818) would end the private ownership and breeding of big cats.
Help us end big cat abuse by making the “Call of the Wild.” This is the most important thing you can do for the cats. Go to StopBigCatAbuse.com or text CATS to 52886 to take action today! (Message and data rates may apply. Text Stop to opt-out. Help for help.) #BigCatAct
What Our Bill Will Do
The Big Cat and Public Safety Act would amend the Captive Wildlife Safety Act, which is part of the Lacey Act. It bans private ownership and breeding of big cats with limited exemptions.
Ban Private Possession. The bill would make it illegal to possess any big cats, except at qualified facilities such as:
USDA licensed facilities that:
- do not allow public contact
- do not employ people who have been convicted or fined for animal abuse or neglect
- have no serious repeat violations in past 12 months or repeatedly refuse to allow inspectors into their facilities
Nonprofit wildlife sanctuaries that do not:
- trade their cats
- do not allow public contact
- do not publicly display their animals outside of their sanctuary
State colleges, universities, agency, or state-licensed veterinarian
Ban Breeding: The bill would limit the breeding of big cats to licensed facilities or owners who breed under a conservation plan.
Grandfather Current Owners & Establish Tracking: The bill would allow owners to keep their current cats, provided they register the cats with US Fish & Wildlife Service [FWS] within 180 days of the Act’s enactment. Owners would not be allowed to buy, sell, or breed big cats; or have direct contact with the public and their big cat.

If you go to TigerRescue.org you can see which states have not had anyone make The Call of the Wild. If you know ANYONE in those states, please explain to them what The Call of the Wild is and why it is so important for them to participate.

4/1/2017 Coordinator Report – Keeper Sue
- Sioux ate about 1oz ground chicken with morning meds
- 2.6 oz. ground chicken at 1 pm
- 5 oz. ground turkey at 4 pm,
- Left 6 oz. ground turkey & cut up turkey w meds,
- I was able to put clean bedding in the small side, but she would not move over so that I could clean the big cage.
Cameron did not eat in the AM and ate only 2 turkey thighs in the PM
Left 10 lbs. of food for Joseph; he was more interested interested in Cameron & Zabu than he was food. He did eat 4 lbs. which was mostly 2 turkey drums.
Attempted to feed TJ 5 times through out the day and he was not interested. All he would eat, all day, was 5 operant pieces of red meat on the keeper tour.
Cam & Zabu’s enclosure is just about finished, need to remove a couple of heavy cement blocks and take the moss off of the roof section.
The project for Sioux & Lakota’s new enclosure is also almost complete. We still need to finish raking the back bubble and put up new lockout ropes. Keeper Rich re-forced a place in the roof that may need a few more hog rings, it is by the ladder that we left there to show where the place in question is located.
Keisha is in heat, again, and did not eat much today. Instead of making her normal a 12 lb. daily diet for her, and throwing most away, her diet for tomorrow is 6 lbs and we will add more if she decides to eat the first 6 lbs.
Coordinator of the day, Keeper Sue

Question: Why does Big Cat Rescue elevate the cats’ water bowls?
Answer: Cats will often pee, or even poop, in their water bowls. Cats will mark everything they claim as their own, including their water bowls. We dump, scrub, rinse, & refill them every morning and top them off throughout the day.

Letter from Viewer Donna Morefield
From my understanding you are having problems sleeping and have been pacing a lot. I know it scary to move to a new place, but let me assure you that BCR is a wonderful place to be. I myself have been here since 2001 and have really enjoyed my stay. They only serve the highest quality meats and will adorn you with the best toys. They even have a thing called “enrichment” where they bring us wonderful smelling objects that we are allowed to rip to shreds, and it is the responsibility of the staff to clean up…we never have to lift a paw!
Though sometimes they staff gets a bit unruly, especially that Gale, and they will rub their odors all over our toys. I have written a letter to management about this and am still awaiting a response. Overall, I give BCR the highest rating, which means a lot coming from a Queen, such as myself. So, my advice to you, my sweet bobcat, relax a little and take a nap. You are about to spend many, many years in a wonderful place!
PS: If you need napping instructions, have the staff give you viewing access to my camera. I’ll personally show you the all best napping positions.
Viewer James Faulds did a really cool edit on Jamie’s photo. I LOVE his touch on the photo!! What do YOU think?
