Big Cat Updates

It was a hot one today.  Reise got a new den today, it was filled with soft dirt and she now has access to the front section. - Angie

Little Dove is going to turn 24 years old on May 12 and is the last surviving cat from the 1993 fur farm rescue of 56 bobcats and lynx.  She ate pretty well yesterday, which was a relief, because the two days before she had just wanted to sleep instead.  We know her days are numbered now, and are keeping a close eye on her for quality of life issues.

Des, Sarah and the interns raked Frosty Serval's cage today of all the leaves, so he's happy to have his space back.

I created this shirt, just so I could order it for myself, to keep Little Dove close to my heart during her last days. I created an entire line with this image of her, (just search dove) but this is my favorite tee shirt style as it is a lot more feminine than the typical crew neck. I'll probably order the sleeveless version too.  - Carole

 Foster Kitten Program

The kittens must have had a fight before they came to the Kitten Cabana yesterday, because they were mad at each other all morning.  Explore.org/bigcatrescue watchers alerted us and Karma sent Lauren in to make sure that it wasn't something in the Kitten Cabana that was scaring them.  We really appreciate that our cats' fans keep such a good eye on them.

Big Cat Rescue greeting cards are a beautiful way to reach out and touch someone, while spreading the word about the plight of captive cats.

People Often Ask

People have been asking if it's true that no sanctuaries were willing to rescue the lions and tigers and bears from Lions Gate (FKA Prairie Wind) last week.  The fact is that none of us in the legitimate sanctuary community, nor any of the big animal protection groups had any idea that the cats would be killed. None of us were asked for help and all of us would have absorbed the animals into our own sanctuaries to prevent this travesty.

Back in 2016 the owners threatened that if their zoning plans were not approved to move them closer to Denver that, “Regrettably, the 18 animals we want to move will meet a terrible fate if we are prevented from moving them."  At the time they didn't say that "terrible fate" would be that they would apparently kill them out of spite.  When big cat owners don't get their way, they often threaten to kill the animals, just to bully their way, but this is the first time I've heard of one of them carrying out that threat.

Here are some good articles on the situation:

Never pay to play with cubs or walk with lions.

Vietnam Police searched Chien’s living place and discovered 3kg of rhino horn, two frozen tiger carcasses, elephant tusks, lion skin, and some other products made from elephant tusk. Chien admitted to police officers that he and his nephews, Tung and Dung, had bought the wildlife from South Africa and shipped them to Malaysia.  https://www.talkvietnam.com/2017/04/vietnam-police-arrest-suspects-for-smuggling-rhino-horns-elephant-tusks-tiger-carcasses/

Tigers aren't native to South Africa, but are raised there for the purpose of luring tourists to pay to play with them before they are sold off into canned hunts and for their parts, as happened in this news story.  This happens world wide and there is no legitimate secondary market for lion and tiger cubs when they get too big to use as photo and petting props.  It just very rarely ends up in the news because there is so little enforcement.
