Big Cat Updates

Arthur’s Upcoming Vet Visit:  Monday morning around 9:00 AM EST Arthur will be getting a vet exam to check for dental issues.  He is 21 and recently has not been eating well.  We have tried several different things such as feeding him further away from the other cats.  We have tried feeding him from a stick, we have tried feeding him different meats, cut to different size pieces.  We suspect a possible dental issue.   Monday we will be sedating him, drawing blood, and seeing if there is a reason for his not wanting to eat.  You can watch the vet visit live at BigCatRescue.org/vet  That camera runs highlights when there is no cat in there.  However, beginning approximately 9:00 AM on Monday you will be able to watch Arthur’s vet visit.

Hoover:  The picky boys have become so spoiled they are content with getting fed 4 or 5 or 6 times a day from the feeding stick.  Now that Hoover is doing so much better we are trying to re-train him to go in his lockout to eat a regular meal.  He is not a good morning eater so he is on an evening meal trial.  Since he does get meds twice a say he will get snacks in the AM and his meal in the PM.

Upcoming De-Worming:  Each quarter the cats are given deworming meds.  Tomorrow some of the cats will fast because the following day they will get worm prevention.  Not all the cats will have a quarterly day of fasting.  Some cats can’t be fasted for a day because of medical issues or because they need to gain weight.  Some of the old cats cannot miss one meal, even if it is only once every three months.

Saturday April 8th – The Picky Boys

  • TJ ate really well today, ate both in the AM and in the PM, too.
  • Cameron was not interested in food for most of the day, however, he did decide to eat boned turkey thighs in the PM
  • Joseph came right over for food in the PM.  He really liked the turkey wings.
  • Hoover was waiting for food in the PM and came right in to lockout, sat down and ate.

Saturday was a busy day.  The work group and volunteers got quite a bit done in outback.

Joseph’s Home Enclosure Deep Cleaning:  Trees trimmed, leaves raked, landscaping done, etc.  Joseph’s home enclosure has five sections and EACH section is about 1800 sq. ft. so it took a whole team working together to give Joseph’s enclosure sections a really deep cleanup.

Tiger Platforms:  The tigers are pretty rough on their platforms so the Holley’s are coming in to replace some boards and screws on some of the tiger platforms.  This couple really goes out of their way to build platforms and ramps for the cats.  the older the cat the longer the ramps to make it easier for the cats to go up and down.  If you want to contribute to projects like this go to bigcatrescue.org/donate/

Gift Shop Upgrade:  New deck was added to the gift shop, complete with a new handicap ramp.  In the comments on the Facebook live feed you asked me to add it to updates so Carole went and snapped a pic for you.

Reise’s New Den:  Reise is getting a new den. Most, in not all, the cats have multiple dens. Since our enclosures are built in sections, each section has to have a den, so that if we have to close off a section for a day or two they will still have a den. They usually have a favorite den.

Letter To Management – Joseph

April 9, 2017

Dear Sir/Madam:

As you know, I am in the Vacation Rotation for the next two, maybe three, weeks.

I must look my best if I am to be an internet celebrity 24/7. This means I will need a personal groomer to brush my long, beautiful mane (eat your heart out, Cameron) a few times a day since it does tend to get a little tangled overnight and on a windy day like we had earlier this week.

I think the best person for this task would be Dr. Justin. I feel that we got off on the wrong foot – or dart, as the case may be – and would welcome the chance to set things right. Therefore, I am extending a personal invitation to him to come visit me in the Vacation Rotation enclosure.

While there, we can laugh and frolic and really get to know each other. We can play Tag, The Doctor Is It; Hide and Seek (no need to bring the Ghillie suit); Musical Platforms (similar to Musical Chairs); and Joseph Says (like Simon Says).

Knowing that Dr. Justin likes to stay healthy, I have designed a special jogging game for him called “Chase and Climb.” We can test his endurance by clocking the amount of time he can hang on the fence or pole to avoid becoming dinner … uh, I mean, avoid being caught. I’m sure we’ll be BFFs by the time my vacation is through.

Please tell him there is no need to bring the dart gun.

Thank you for your attention.

Notes To Newcomers

These letters to management our written by one of our viewers who knows the cats quite well.  The cats have individual personalities and the viewers who love these cats are great at finding humor in the cats’ antics.  Below are explanations of a couple points so the letter will make sense and be funny for you:

** The cats get two weeks on vacation, but Joseph Lion can be stubborn and sometimes decides to take a few days before deciding it is time to go home.

** When on vacation you can watch the cats on a high quality web cam at explore.org/bigcatrescue and when not on vacation Joseph has his own nest cam web cams and have quite a following of viewers who adore this “sweet” old lion who can be picky with his food and cranky with the vets, or any keepers who help the vets.

** Joseph lion does not like Dr. Justin.  Dr. Justin had to shoot him with a sedation dart some time back for an emergency medical issue.  Joseph has never forgotten and certainly has not forgiven Dr. Justin.  Every chance Joseph gets he makes quite sure Dr. Justin knows he has not been forgiven.

Featured Cat – Arthur Tiger

Arthur hasn’t been eating well and has been acting strange toward Andre and Amanda.  Today Dr. Justin will draw blood on 4/10/17 and do other diagnostics to see what we can do for this 21 year old tiger.

To see all of Arthur’s tees, tanks, mugs, necklaces, phone and iPad cases and more go to: https://catrescue.myshopify.com/search?type=product&q=arthur
Arthur is 21 year old male tiger.

Born 1/1/96 – Rescued 9/28/11

Arthur is social with his keepers, however he keeps his guard up at times.

Arthur loves his brother Andre dearly and the two are often found cuddled up in the same den or lounging together in one of their pools. Arthur is the dominant tiger in the group and shows off his fierce attitude at dinner time. We can only guess the feeding situation of their previous home, but from they way these three tigers act it seems they may have had to fight over food at times.

All three tigers are so aggressive when it comes to food they have to be separated. While each has their own feeding lock out that they are fed in, if they are not separated into different enclosures as well they will run back and forth through the enclosures to steal one another’s food resulting in fights. To avoid this the keepers go around an separate them before meal time.

Arthur, Andre and Amanda were born in 1996 in New Jersey to be used as pay-to-play photo props. It never makes sense to breed more cubs to raise money to feed last year’s cats, and the New Jersey facility fell into disrepair and then was shut down after USDA revoked their license following a tiger escape.

Amanda, Andre, & Arthur are sometimes referred to by keepers as “The Texas Tigers” or “The Texas Three”

In 2003, Wild Animal Orphanage took in the 24 tigers, but big cats have big appetites and by 2010 the Wild Animal Orphanage was in bankruptcy.

It took over a year to find permanent homes for all of the cats because it is hard to place a big cat who will cost $10,000 per year in food and vet care.

Amazingly, an anonymous donor couple who had known these tigers as cubs fortuitously stepped in to fund the ongoing care of these three lucky tigers who came to Big Cat Rescue in 2011. This almost never happens.

Usually people pay to play with cubs or pay to get a photo holding a cub but then they never stop to wonder where that cub ended up or what happens to them. These three sibling tigers are some of the very few lucky ones that end up in accredited sanctuaries. Most of them so not so fortunate. Learn more at bigcatrescue.org/cubs/

Arthur and his sister, Amanda

Decisions, decisions, decisions.  Which Christmas present to attack first?

So much for the haunted house, but Arthur and his siblings sure had a good time.

Arthur with his brother and sister.  “Amanda Sandwich”

Andre & Arthur on their favorite platform.

I can’t remember if this is Andre or Arthur, but I know it is one of those two boys.  I’m not as good at telling the boys apart in photos as Carole and the keepers are.

Although they have multiple dens, they often like sharing one.  This is Arthur and his brother Andre.

Arthur and Andre sharing a snuggle? Or is someone being bossy?

Brotherly Love

Say What?

Who’s the boss?

I AM Smiling!  Take the photo, already!

I haz donut!  Where’s the coffee?
