Big Cat Updates

Cyrus and Zimba both are in the recovery hospital as they both saw Dr. Justin yesterday.  See yesterday’s Big Cat Update for the video replays.

Mickey Cougar enjoyed several sicles yesterday.  THANK YOU, to everyone who has been sending in tuna and sardines for sicles.  The cats are loving the treats.

Keeper Lynda’s Coordinator Report for Sunday 8/13/17

We started out our day with a rain shower during feeding time so there were several cats that needed second feeds (littles don’t like to eat in the rain!) But, in the end all the cats ate well, including our infamous picky cats. Keisha enjoyed one of the feathered birds so be sure to feed them out to her as an option if there are extras in the cooler.

Interns that are winding down their time with us got feeding and operant signoffs.

Pierina took her cougar enrichment class and went out to do her first observation when Rebecca went out to give cicles to the cougars.

Red shirt Candice took her map test and got 100% so she was proudly sporting her volunteer shirt today (as opposed to trainee).

Jen R came in to do projects and cleaned out behind Seth and said she got about quarter of the way down. She took some photos of her progress and is going to solicit other keepers to come out and join the fun with her next weekend.

All and all a quiet Sunday with just enough volunteers to clean all sections. Thanks to our Sunday senior keepers Rebecca, Regina, Barbie and Sarah D who pumped out food prep while interns covered afternoon tours.

Thanks to everyone!!

Keeper Lauren’s Coordinator Report for Monday 8/14/2017

Zimba and Cyrus both saw Dr Justin today. They are currently in the recovery hospital.

Zimbas enclosure was cleaned up, the roof cleaned and inside raked. There is still one bubble that has piles that need to be picked up.

Cyrus’ cage also needs to be cleaned over the next couple days.

Most of the cats ate well. A few picky cats were extra picky today but it was very hot.

 ACTION ALERT – Canada Residents

Animal Justice in Canada has exposed horrific animal cruelty happening at a roadside zoo called Papanack Zoo in Ontario. In their undercover video, a zoo manager describes “training” a lion cub by repeatedly hitting the cub in the face.

Last year Papanack Zoo sparked outrage by gunning down a lion named Zeus after he escaped from his cage.

IF YOU RESIDE IN CANADA, PLEASE HELP –sign this letter to Ontario Premier Wynne and Safety Minister Lalonde to end the cruelty at the zoo and ask them to institute animal cruelty laws for zoos in Ontario. https://e-activist.com/page/6661/action/1

Everyone else outside Canada can share this post and include #PapanackZooCruelty

Afton put together some clips to recap Cooper’s progress when he went outside and testing his hunting ability.

Here are some recent viewer videos of Little Cooper.

Viewer Matthew B:

Viewer Shana P: Cooper is being a very impatient little hunter tonight. They have recently expanded his hunting space so the rats have more locations they can pop out of, and he would like them to just pop into his tummy!

Viewer Shana P: So, a couple of hours later right as night fell, the rat finally made an appearance. Watch closely after it disappears in the nearer tunnel and you will see it appear in the far tunnel and Cooper swoop in and grab it. You can see him carry it off in triumph at the end.

Keeper Lynda is the Friday Meds Purr-son. Every Friday her and Reise Cougar have to have a conversation before Reise will come take her meds.

Note To Viewers:  Keeper Jen R says all the keepers want to THANK EACH OF YOU for sending in the colored tissue paper and children’s washable non-toxic paint.  The keepers love making enrichment goodies for the cats and the cats LOVE destroying whatever the keepers make.  Your kind gifts will bring a lot of joy to the cats and the keepers. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Keeper Rebecca Williams:  I was happy to see Tiger Lily relaxing on top of her den at the end of the day. She waited for me to walk away then came over to enjoy her bloodcicle.

Tiger Lilly is pretty old and is very shy.  In the wild bobcats are pretty elusive and they can be like that in captivity as well.  Here at Big Cat Rescue we make sure all the cats have hiding places so that if they choose to not be seen they can.  Some cats really like staying hidden more than others.  Tiger Lilly is one who likes to hide so we give her extra places so she can.  Today, she seemed to enjoy coming out to watch the keepers.  In this photo, if you look closely at the bottom of her den you can see it is elevated upon a mound.  That is so that when we get heavy rain their dens stay high and dry.  Tiger Lilly, like almost all the cats, have more than one den.  This one seems to be her favorite den for today.

Here are some screenshots Carole captured while putting together Cooper’s video.  These are from when he got here.  Hope you don’t mind seeing them.

Carole just finished a longer version of Cooper’s video.  It has also been added to Cooper’s page.  https://BigCatRescue.org/cooper/
