Keeper Lynda’s Coordinator Report for Sunday, August 20, 2017

We had a sea of red shirt keeper trainee and partner trainees today – I just love to see new volunteers coming in to experience the joy of being here at BCR. The keeper trainees started their day by picking up all the large branches that had fallen in yesterday’s rainstorm. Then they cleaned the small cat sections and afterwards three of them, Bridget, Stephanie and Deidre joined Jen R on the project of cleaning out behind Kali. They mowed and week whacked and dug up some very large burr plants. Also during the day I sent some of the interns to scour the area around the new gift shop and in the front section for burr plants as well and they found quite a few. We’ll have to all be on the lookout for those again.

Unfortunately we did not get to the wire pile behind Jinx so that will have to stay on the project list for this week.

We were a little tight on senior keepers but Sarah C, Sarah D and Mary Lou got it all done. Bonnie, meanwhile, got a signoff for doing the keeper part of the keeper tour – she just needs one more.

Brooke, a red shirt from the gift shop, Bridget and Stephanie stayed even later and helped in doing food prep & cleaning the cooler since we have so few interns. It was really a great team effort for another wonderful Sunday. I decided to use some of the red to make ground beef so there are baseballs of that in the small cat diets. There’s a tub of some more ground beef in the cooler for tomorrow.

Even Keisha ate some in lockout this morning and the other picky cats did alright as well.

Hi, Karen, you are only seeing a portion of their cage in the videos.  They actually have a lot more space than can be seen in the videos.  Each cat has a minimum or two cage sections with each section being 1200 to 1800 sq ft.  Learn more about their cages at http://bigcatrescue.org/cages/

Hi Karen, we too, wish they could go wild and free.  However, there are many reason that we cannot just set them free.  It is really interesting to read the reasons why at http://bigcatrescue.org/gofree/

We do not have any cheetahs or jaguars. Here is why: http://bigcatrescue.org/cheetah-jaguar/

  Safari Days

Have you reserved your Safari Days ticket, yet?  This annual even usually sells out in advance, so grab your tickets early.

On November 4, 2017 you can walk about the sanctuary at your own pace, take all the photos and videos you want, and have the benefit of knowing that your admission will go to conserving exotic cats in the wild.  Children of all ages are welcome but all tickets are $25 each.  We are ADA compliant for wheelchairs and scooters.

We have selected five important “in situ” projects (i.e. work being done out in the wild to preserve species). Each project is devoted to a different species – Tiger, Lion, Cougar, Ocelot and Bobcat.

ClipArt Cub in a cape Keeper Corner

Keeper Afton:  We reintroduced Chaos and Cyrus. I’m sitting here (the cage behind me is empty) keeping a watchful eye.

Keeper Honey:  Babycakes and Zucari using their Coolaroo beds

Keeper Lauren Buckingham:  A HUGE Thank You to our wonderful followers who were so quick to respond to my call for Fly Traps. We have had numerous boxes delivered over the past few days and I’m told there are more to come. You have far exceeded what I had hoped for. This is one of the simplest ways to help keep the cats comfortable in buggy Florida and we now have a good supply because of YOU! I have passed them over to the keepers who told me we were short, I’m sure they will be thrilled.

Jen R shared some more project photos: Today we kicked some serious plant butt. Great project team today.

 Barking Dog Question

Many of you have contacted us about hearing a dog barking on Cooper’s web cam so I asked Carole about it.   Here is Carole’s reply: There is a dog that has been barking all day on the West side of the wall at the party house. The wall echos it and the water carries the sound. So the dog is a LOOOOOONG way away, but annoying us all.

Big Cat Friend Matthew B got a couple cute night videos of Cooper playing and climbing his platform.

Big Cat Friend Susann got some cute vidoes of Cooper, too.

Big Cat Friend Nancy B. got a cute clip of Little Cooper playing with a rock.  Here is a longer version on her YouTube channel.

Big Cat Friend Matthew B: I caught Andy Tiger playing in Tiger Lake on Friday August 18th, 2017. It is two separate clips edited together because at one point he got out of the Lake then went back in a minute later.

Big Cat Friend Matthew B: I caught Cameron Lion roaring on the Vacation Rotation Camera just after midnight on 8-21-17. And I know it was Cameron because I double checked Joseph’s camera at lionselfie.com and I couldn’t hear roaring there.
