Preparing for Hurricane Dorian

You can help ensure that when we need your help the most, the money is here to cover the costs of preparing for and cleaning up from disasters such as hurricanes, tornados, flooding, natural disasters, interruptions in food supplies and those that could be caused by terrorists. Any funds not used for this impending disaster will be available to the sanctuary for future threats to the cats.

The official hurricane season for the Atlantic Basin (the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico) is from June 1st to November 30th so Dorian my not be the last storm we see this season.

Will you help us be prepared for hurricanes and other disasters to the care of the cats will not be hampered in times of crisis? https://bigcatrescue.salsalabs.org/Disaster

Coordinator Report – Lauren Grant

Great day today! Thank you to everyone who was able to come and help today! We managed to get feeding and cleaning done without taking too long?. Karma did cicles today so Marie could get some operant done.

Fred, Dylan, Abbey, & I cleaned up Illithia’s enclosure so it’s all ready for when she comes home. Candy Couser & Bethany Smith did food prep. Fred, Abbey, & Dylan also started on filling sandbags for our possible storm next week ?. We still need quite a few more, but it’s a good start!

That’s about it!
Thanks, everyone for a great day!

Q&A at Big Cat Rescue- Follow along as Keeper Brittany shows you many of the Tigers, Lion, Leopards, Jaguar, Cougars, Lynx, Servals, Bobcats, Savannah Cats and an Ocelot that call Big Cat Rescue home! Cats Featured: Tiger Lilly Bobcat, Lakota Bobcat, Purrfection Ocelot, King Tut Savannah Cat, Breezy Bobcat, Andi Bobcat, Des Serval, Diablo Savannah Cat, Max Bobcat and Dutchess Tiger!

People Often Ask

Do the cats have room to run? Why are the cages so small?

Watch as Zucari Serval races from section to section thru his suite of cages.

Our cages are built in section connected by doors and tunnels. Building our enclosures in sections with curved walls helps them to be stronger and to withstand hurricanes and tropical storms. Other benefits are we can quickly close a cat out of a section for repairs, landscaping, or putting in enrichment goodies.

Kristine’s Bobcat Rehab Overnight Kitten Report

MALACHITE – Malachite napped in the late afternoon after playing a bit with his stuffies. Then Karma came in and he hid in his hut, while she cleaned Flint’s room and when she cleaned his cages. She gave him fresh blankets, water, and food and after she left, he came out and checked his things out, then found his dinner and ate some of it. Then he played with his stuffie and hut, batting and biting them, then he got cozy by his bed, hut, and stuffies and took a nice nap.

Later he woke up for a short time and played a little, then went back to his place between his bed and stuffie to nap some more. After quite a long nap, he woke up and played some more. He played with his stuffie, wrestling it and bunny kicking it, lol. So cute! He played with his hut and wandered back and forth through his cages. He sat at the front of his cage and looked around his room. Then he went to the back of his cage and played back there for a bit. Then he came back up front and laid by his bed to bathe. Then he moved to his back cage to take another nap. As I write this, he is awake and wandering around his cage, listening to Flint play. He is such a cutie pie! 🙂

FLINT – Precious Flint played in the late afternoon, running around batting, biting and attacking everything he could, lol. He wrestled with his stuffie, carrying it around in his mouth, then wrestling like mad with it. He jumped up on his post and sat there for a while looking around. Pretty soon Karma came in to clean his room and give him fresh water and food. She gave him some more enrichment, a box with holes in it and she put paper balls inside. He played with it for a while and got some of the paper balls out, then he got inside the box and wildly played, lol. So cute!

Then he found his dinner and played with part of it, flipping it all over and in the air, lol. After he had played with it for a while he finally decided to eat it, lol. He ran around his room and played his stuffies, blankets, hut and triangle scratcher. He plays with all of his energy, it’s just so adorable! After he wore himself out, he got comfy on his hut, by his enrichment and took a nice nap. A while later he woke up for a short time and wandered around a bit, before settling back down on his hut to take a long nap.

Late into the night he woke up and played with his stuffies and hut, wrestling them and then running around. Then he got cozy on his hut again and took a bath. So adorable! Then he drifted off to nap some more. As I write this, he is awake again and starting to play. He’s too adorable for words! 🙂

ASH and CINDER – Ash and Cinder spent the afternoon napping on and by the den in the front left section. Cinder napped on top of the den, while Ash napped back behind it. They napped there for quite a while and then Ash got up and wandered around, while Cinder stayed on the den to lounge a bit. Then Ash came back and Cinder jumped down to wander around and then pace the fence for a while. Eventually, Ash went to the very back section and got up on top of the tall platform to lounge and then nap. Cinder stayed upfront for a while and got back up on the den to bathe and lounge.

As the sun was setting Cinder was still up front pacing the fence and Ash was still on the tall platform. As it was getting dark, Cinder wandered to the back section to join Ash. They napped back there well into the night. Later overnight they came back up front and wandered around for a bit and sat on the Coolaroo looking around. Ash laid down on the Coolaroo and took a nice bath. Then Cinder paced the fence while Ash rolled around on the Coolaroo and then they disappeared to the middle section for a while. As I write this, they are back up front wandering around and pacing the fence. They are just too adorable! 🙂

Enjoy your day!
Warm wishes, Kristine Metzner
