SINCE 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, the Cebu City Zoo expects more tourists to visit their two-year-old Bengal Tiger Bogart, if only to pat the animal for good luck the whole year round.
Giovanni Stephen Romarate, the zoo’s administrator, said they had to open the zoo at 6 a.m yesterday because they could not refuse the four buses of tourists who came all the way from Masbate just to see Bogart.
The Cebu City Zoo is situated at a hilly portion of the city in barangay Kalunasan.
Romarate said that since Bogart arrived at the zoo, they noticed an increase in the number of of visitors.
Adults are charged P25 each and P10 each for the children.
According to the Chinese horoscope, 2010 is considered the Year of the Metal Tiger.
It officially starts on Feb. 15, 2010 and ends on Feb. 3, 2011. It will be followed by the rabbit.
Romarate said the black, white and orange striped Bogart has been the crowd favorite since it arrived in April 2007.
Unlike tigers in the wild, a caretaker doesn’t feed the feline with live animals in order to condition it not to not harm anyone.
Romarate said they feed Bogart 40 kilos of either pork, beef, or chicken meat everyday.
But since Bogart has an inborn polio on his right hind, Romarate said they need to monitor his feedings so he won’t gain weight.
Bogart was donated to the zoo by Romarate’s family friend.
He said the zoo will soon receive a female Siberian tiger.
“It’s hard for us to receive the animal unless we have prepared the cage for her,” Romarate said.
The Cebu City Zoo is scheduled for expansion next year.
