Captured tigress released in Sunderbans forest

Sunderbans (WB) Jan 13 (PTI):

A Royal Bengal tigress, which was caught from a human habitat recently, was today released into the Chora Mayadwip forests here in the presence of Union Minister of Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh.

The tigress was released from a launch in the afternoon into the mangrove forests of Sunderbans.

The feline, which had strayed into Kultali village on January three, was trapped three days back and had injured a man.

Sixty-three deer were also released at Dobankin Tiger Reserve Camp as the first project in the Sunderbans for continuing the food chain for the tiger population.

While four years back 14 deer were brought by forest officials in Sunderbans, the number shot up to 63.

Rs.200 crore aid for Sundarbans development

The central government will infuse Rs.200 crore over the next five years for the development of West Bengal’s Sundarbans biosphere, Ramesh said.

“Every year we spend Rs.10 crore for Sundarbans development. This is given under the Project Tiger, as also the mangrove project,” Ramesh told mediapersons during a tour of the Sundarbans.

Now the central government has taken up a World Bank-aided integrated coastal zone project in West Bengal, Gujarat and Orissa.

“Under this, we will give Rs.200 crore for Sundarbans development over the next five years,” he said.
