Conduct tiger post-mortems in our presence: NTCA to states

Monday, May 4, 2009

Bhopal (PTI) Alarmed over rise in deaths of tigers across the country, especially in Madhya Pradesh, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has directed states that henceforth postmortem of the big cat should be carried out only in the presence of its representatives.

“We have recently received a circular from NTCA, asking us not to go in for post-mortem of tigers in the absence of a NTCA’s representative henceforth,” State Principal Chief Conservator of Forest H S Pabla said on Monday.

He said they have been asked to keep the dead tiger in deep freezer till the NTCA representative arrives to be present during the post-mortem.

“This circular has not come for Madhya Pradesh alone.Other states too are included in it,” Mr. Pabla told PTI.

The NTCA move comes after recent reports of deaths of several big cats across the country.

Seven tigers have died in Madhya Pradesh’s Kanha Tiger Reserve since April 2008 and the state forest officials claim that six of them had died in territorial fights among them and one had been electrocuted by the poachers.
