BHOPAL: A leopard was adopted by a couple in the Van Vihar National Park here, an official said on Friday.

Meena and MK Gupta gave a cheque for Rs.5,760 to Madhya Pradesh Tiger Foundation Society and “adopted” the leopard for one month – implying they would pay for its feeding and upkeep for a month.

This is the third case of adoption of a wild animal in Van Vihar National Park in the past one month. Earlier, a python and tiger were similarly “adopted”, the official added.

The national park launched the adoption scheme earlier this year to enable animal lovers in Madhya Pradesh to pay for the feeding and upkeep of a wild animal of their choice.

“The national park has launched the scheme for adoption of wild animals with a view to instilling affection towards wildlife in the hearts of people,” said Minister of State for Forest Rajendra Shukla.

At present Van Vihar has 13 tigers, 14 lions, 16 leopards, 38 bears, a hyena, about 80 jackals and more than a dozen crocodiles.
