The Wins Keep Coming!

Hawaii became the second state to effectively prohibit the use of many wild animal species in traveling shows and circuses!

Hawaii became the second state to effectively prohibit the use of many wild animal species in traveling shows and circuses!

Governor Ige has signed the regulation to prohibit the importation of dangerous wild animals – including tigers, lions, bears, primates, elephants, and crocodiles – for performances in circuses, carnivals, and other public exhibitions.

Thank you to our friends at the Humane Society of the United States for spearheading this effort, resulting in a second win just on the heels of New Jersey’s historic ban!

Big Cat Public Safety Act Update

The Big Cat Public Safety Act, Call of the Wild

The 115th session of Congress will be coming to a close at the end of this year. Although the Big Cat Public Safety Act did not make it to a vote, it did have 144 cosponsors in the House and 6 cosponsors in the Senate – the greatest amount of support we’ve ever had thanks to over 10,000 calls to Congress! That’s a record high!

Don’t fret; we will be reintroducing the Big Cat Public Safety Act into the 116th session of Congress sometime next year. We are going to keep fighting!

The Call of the Wild will remain the same for now. During this busy holiday season, we will continue to encourage our guests to make the Call of the Wild to ask their legislators to cosponsor the Big Cat Public Safety Act HR1818 / S2990. Every call matters – especially now, at the end of the session. These calls help build momentum for next year and increase the likelihood of current cosponsors signing back on in support.

The Call of the Wild will be updated for the new session of Congress as soon as our new signs and call cards arrive. I will post an alert when that occurs.

Thank you for getting us closer to our goal of ending big cat abuse. With your help, we’re going to start the new year strong for the Big Cat Public Safety Act!

Coordinator Reports

Dec 23, 2018 – Lauren Buckingham

Today was a lot of fun. Thank you to everyone who came in to help!

We went around and replaced the heated beds and hay for a number of small cats, to make sure they are all warm with the colder weather. We also handed out some more Christmas trees.  Rebecca made some more sicles.

Lacy took her map test and got her new yellow shirt. Amanda should be getting hers tomorrow. Mazz got her 10-week reward, a painting from a tiger.  Operant and Enrichment sign-offs were done.

Mary J., Steph C., and Dylan continued painting in Max & MaryAnn’s enclosure. Dylan trimmed the tree in the tall section, there are some big branches that will need cutting up to remove.  Everyone chipped into to get food prep done and the cooler cleaned up.

That’s it from me!

I hope everyone has a great Christmas 🎄

Today was a beautiful day!!! It’s started a little chilly, but it warmed up all around!  We had lots of wonderful volunteers that helped feed, clean, guide tours, and so much more.  Barbara did what she loves to do to help the sanctuary stay pretty. She was happy picking up tree debris from the windy storm we got.

Rich kept the pumps going to help take out some of the water we got from the rain.  Mary and Amanda stayed late after cleaning and helped finish food prep and some of the chores.  We got lots of sign-offs today for feeding, enrichment, and operant.

Afton was busy today putting Christmas enrichment and Christmas trees all around the Sanctuary. It was fun watching the cats enjoy it!

Here are some pictures of our fun day!!
