Saying Goodbye to Our Beloved Maya Cougar
Maya Cougar has died. 12/3/18 6 PM Dr. Justin came out and said it looked very bleak for Maya but we decided to give her pain meds for her bitten tongue and steroids to see if that helped at all.
Keepers, Kathryn, Afton, and Aleesa stayed with Maya until about 7:30 PM. Since she was sleeping peacefully, they alerted Carole to take the first of the night shifts on the Nest Cam.
12/3/18 7:47 PM Maya stopped breathing. Keepers were called back to the hospital where Jamie joined them, but Maya was gone. She was such an amazing cat and will be greatly missed.

Coordinator Report – Dec 4 – Kathryn Stapleton
Its been a couple heartbreaking days. In spite of that everyone pulled together and got everything done. All the cats got fed, cleaned, and enriched even though we were stretched thin with Kids Tours and a really sick cat. I appreciate everyone’s help and understanding that myself and the other coordinators and staff were preoccupied with taking care of Maya Cougar.
Today was no exception and we had a lot of great help. Megan, Pam Rodriguez, Melinda Berkley-Coats, Candy Couser, and Mazz took care of the Kids Tour. Tanya, Victoria DiGiacomo, MaryLou Geis, Sharon Henry, Mary Jerome, and Elle took care of the cleaning.
Food prep was done just after lunch by the Interns. During tours, Mary J., Megan Myers, Candy, and Susana Zhong cleaned up. Des Serval was examined and mats were shaved. He will be in the recovery hospital overnight. All the picky cats ate well today!
I am on vacation starting tomorrow till December 10th.

Coordinator Report – Dec 3 – Jennifer Ruszczyk
Some days are tougher than others. Yesterday was a tough day. We started out with a few but mighty volunteers and interns. We had just enough people to cover all of the tours and animal care.
Our very observant volunteers noted that Maya Cougar had not come up to eat and Kathyrn Stapleton quickly identified she was not acting normal. She was brought to the hospital and observed overnight. Big thanks to the staff and vets that came to help. Huge thanks to the interns and volunteers for getting everything covered while we took care of Maya.
Super Great News
Environmental Crimes Committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police announced at its recent annual conference, a Resolution drafted by the Committee. Please see attached.
This is the first occasion upon which the Association has formally recognized the seriousness of environmental crimes, with something of an emphasis on wildlife crime. It also recognizes the risks faced by those tasked with protecting our environment and its species.
The greatest significance is that this international Police body is calling upon the law enforcement community as a whole to support efforts to combat environmental crime. This, in itself, will hopefully help raise the profile of environmental crime, particularly among Police agencies.
