Breeders at Changsha Zoo in Hunan’s provincial capital have been beside themselves since a pair of tigers and giraffes began mating.

If she has already fallen pregnant, the female Bengal tiger may deliver cubs early next year, while an infant giraffe could arrive before the end of 2009, zoo staff enthused.

It would be the first time the zoo’s Bengal tiger Jia Jia has delivered in five years. Jia Jia, 15, gave birth to two cubs in December 2003.

And it would be the female giraffe Qi Qi’s third delivery. Qi Qi gave birth to a cub in August 2005 and another in November 2007.
