Farm owner to face consequences of lion attack

August 10, 2006, 17:15

SOUTH AFRICA — The owner of a Free State game farm where two security guards were mauled to death by lions will be charged with the unlawful possession of large predators.

Daan Muller, the deputy director of biodiversity research at the Free State Nature Conservation, says the Game Lodge farm owner’s lion’s permit had expired at the time of the incident.

Muller says they warned the owner to upgrade the lion’s enclosure several months ago.

Meanwhile, Free State Nature Conservation says the public has nothing to fear. The department says all lions in the province are carefully monitored and lion owners who do not comply with regulations will be prosecuted.

One of the victims has been identified as Motlalentoa Tats (54). The other victim has not been identified yet. The police are still investigating the matter
