Big Cat Updates

Sassy Cougar is enjoying FunCation and has been flirting with her neighbors in the back.

The new rehab bobcat’s name is Wyeth, she is 8 months old and was hit by a car.  She has no broken bones, and had two lacerations that were stitched up on her inner right leg and tongue.  She is dragging her back right leg, but occasionally places it correctly and bares weight on it.  This may heal on its own, or we may sedate her again to further examine.  She is on dewormers and prednisone.  So far she has eaten the dewormer in mush and the meds in a chick.  We sometimes keep the sheets between her and Nova open so they can see each other, they seem to be entertained by one another.  Wyeth is positive for hookworms and spirometra, so we have to be sure to limit any cross contamination between her and Nova.  They each have their own litter pan scoopers.   You can stay up to date with Wyeth’s progress on her PURR-sonal page at bigcatrescue.org/wyeth/

We need to collect another fecal sample from her. Once she is cleared we can put her outside (after fixing up a few things in the rehab cage as well).  Nova only has one cage right now, but she does have a crate which she can be shut into. Her blankets do not really need changing unless obviously dirty as she has been using the litter pan.

The Picky Boys

Hoover:  Hoover ate 8 pounds earlier in the day, not counting what he ate in this video.

Cameron: Cameron ate pretty well, too!

Joseph:  He ate 8 pounds early in the day split into two morning meals.  That amount does NOT count what he had in his evening meal & snacks with meds.

TJ:  Feb 15, 2017  Keepers got TJ to eat 12 pounds!  YES, Keeper Kathryn did a Happy Dance!  One of these days, Carole will catch that on camera!!

Zeus:  Zeus Tiger has decided he wants his meat cut into very small pieces.  If we give him tiger size bites he refuses it. So keepers tried cutting it into smaller pieces, and HAPPY DANCE it worked.  It is extra work for the keepers but they are happy to do it for him.

PLEASE NOTE:   Weights recorded here daily are taken from individual keeper observations that are generated by our internal website at different times of day.  Various keepers feed these cats throughout the day, so any amount you see here will NOT reflect the cats’ complete consumption throughout the day.  I just pull from a few of the individual keeper logs that are posted on our internal server after the morning feedings and sometimes the late morning feedings.  However, this page is posted before all the keepers are finished so it obviously does not reflect all the amounts eaten by the cats.  Each day ALL the individual keeper logs are monitored closely by the vet team so while I may not purr-sonally have all the numbers in by the time this update goes out in the early afternoon please know the vets are seeing all the numbers each day and are keeping a close watch on what these picky boys are eating.

Please speak out for this 16-week-old tiger cub used for photos in Florida!

The notorious traveling zoo called Jungle Safari (formerly The Zoo) exhibits and charges the public to hold tiger cubs for photos and also exhibits adult tigers in tiny transport cages. Last week Jungle Safari was set up in a strip mall parking lot in Zephyrhills, Florida. Learn more http://911animalabuse.com/the-zoo/

Big Cat Rescue contacted Allen Road Storage, which owns the parking lot and allowed Jungle Safari to set up their zoo for a week. We tried to educate the owner of the storage facility that it is cruel and abusive to exploit tiger cubs as photo props and force adult tigers to live for weeks or even months at a time in tiny transport cages. We received no reply….so we are asking YOU to speak up for this cub and let Allen Road Storage know there are many people who advocate for and love big cats and don’t want to see them exploited as photo props in traveling zoos. Request that Allen Road Storage never again allow any zoo to exhibit animals on its property.

Contact Allen Road Storage at 813-517-8128 or 813-788-7825 and email them at allenroadstorage@gmail.com

 Keeper Fun Pix & Notes

Keeper Lisa A. and Hoover’s Reading Sessions Update 2/14/2017:  Hi:) today’s selection for Hoover was Corey Feldman’s autobiography. He stayed in his den the whole time…again:) but Gabrielle is back in her enclosure next to him and she thoroughly enjoyed it.  She semi napped in the shade of her platform, but it was quite obvious she was listening.

Keisha Tiger now LOVES drum sticks but doesn’t care much for red meat.

Nabisco was attempting to “BE THE BOSS” by sitting in the overhead tunnel/skywalk and not letting Mr’s Claws through.  However, his bossiness only lasted a few minutes. You can see that near the end of the Facebook Live Video Replay above.

Feb 15 at 5:30 PM:  Checking in with both rehab cuties today, Wyeth and Nova. Both of them had nothing but growls for me.  ~Keeper Afton

Feb 15, 2017:  I think Kali and Zabu are ‘frenemies’.  Usually Zabu likes to roar at Kali but I found them hanging out near each other yesterday. ~Keeper Rebecca W

This is Kali Tiger and you can see Zabu Tiger over in the next enclosure.  There is a big space between the two enclosures and Carole’s brother even built a wooden privacy fence down the center of that however those two girls still have a keen interest in trying to see what the other one is doing.
