Big Cat Updates

The newest little rehab bobcat kitten passed her SNAP test yesterday and was vaccinated, deflead and dewormed.

What is a SNAP test? It’s a test to screen cats to detect specific antibodies to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) in feline serum, plasma or anticoagulated whole blood. A positive test result indicates that an unvaccinated cat has been circulating FIV antibody and therefore is likely infected.

What is FIV? Cats who are infected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) may not show symptoms until years after the initial infection occurred. Although the virus is slow-acting, a cat’s immune system is severely weakened once the disease takes hold. This makes the cat susceptible to various secondary infections. This is why we check all of our foster kittens, their mommas, and all incoming rehab cats upon arrival. While FIV cats can live long, full lives, they shouldn’t be allowed to come in contact with other cats for fear of spreading the disease. A rehab bobcat who tests positive for FIV cannot be released for fear of wiping out the native bobcat population.

At this point, if we get enough votes for Valspar to have more votes than all the other PGA charity tournaments than each vote could potentially mean about $3 each for the cats, up to about $65,000 We hate to keep asking, every day, but if you could PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, keep this going for just a little while longer the cats stand a real chance of winning.

Do big cats get the same diseases as little cats? Yes, and our cats are all vaccinated against the top cat killing diseases, including rabies. The difference is that the vaccines have to be killed virus vaccines, as the big cats can often die from being vaccinated with live or modified live vaccines. The problem is that there has never been studies done to show if the vaccines (of any kind) are effective in big cats. That’s just one more reason why people should never pay to touch a wild cat or cub and why they should never share those kinds of images on the ‘net.

If a cat were to bite someone, the CDC could demand the cat’s head be cut off and tested for rabies, even if the cat was vaccinated and even if the person who was bitten chose to get the antidote rabies shots. There is no way to handle big cats without putting their lives in peril. If you love big cats; just say no to petting.
