Guatemala Tiger Rescue News

Everyone wants to know when the four tigers from the Guatemala circus will be arriving and we just don’t know. We had hoped that FWS would publish our import request in the Federal Register last Nov. which would have meant 30 days of having to wait for them to process comments on it, and then hopefully the cats could arrive in Jan. Thanks to the slow process and the government shut down, our application still hasn’t made it to the Federal Register to start the 30-day countdown. As soon as it does, we will let you know.

Meanwhile, thanks to you, we have been able to provide their care in the ADI temporary camp in Guatemala which has now exceeded $26,000. Big Cat Rescue is still paying for the care of the cats coming to BCR and helping with other expenses for the overall rescue there. Happy 18th Anniversary to Denny Mitchell !!

Denny Mitchell has been volunteering at Big Cat Rescue for EIGHTEEN, yes, 18 years! He has volunteered OVER 3,500 hours, but probably a more! During those years Denny has taken well over 20,000- (might be closer to 30k) people on tour of Big Cat Rescue. He has volunteered OVER 3,500 hours, but probably a more!

If you ever get a chance to take a tour with Denny I certainly recommend it. PURRsonally, I LOVE tagging along on Denny’s tours because he has such a fun way of presenting the cats and important information that you will NEVER EVER forget it!!

I remember one year, I think it was late June 2013 when it was EXTREMELY HOT and HUMID!! I was creating a game online called Santa’s Summer Vacation at Big Cat Rescue. Denny was a trooper. Denny, Chris, (Cole & Marmalade’s Dad) and I walked around the sanctuary for a couple hours in the HOTTEST MUGGIEST part of the afternoon. We were LITERALLY MELTING and Denny had on the big Santa beard etc. He was telling the cats’ stories as only a true Santa could. The cats, who by the way, LOVE DENNY, all came out to chat with Santa. I caught myself so busy watching him I almost forgot to turn on the video or take photos.

Vacation Rotation was still being built and Denny climbed up on the big tiger platform and sat in a lawn chair reading the Big Cat Times with his feet propped up on a cooler. We then went to see more cats and then stopped at the beach by Tiger Lake where Santa in his summer Hawaiian shirt and big beard kicked back with a bottle of water to finish reading the Big Cat Times. The couple weeks in July that I ran those photos and videos TONs and TONs of people did big cat sponsorships and signed up to begin receiving the Big Cat Times.

I’m telling you it was SOOOOOO HOT and HUMID I don’t see how Denny did not faint from exhaustion or melt clean away. PURRsonally, I was about to collapse from the heat and humidity but not Denny. I laughed so hard that afternoon that come nightfall my sider were literally more.

Oh, by the way, Denny also does a hilarious and very informative cat show about domestic cats and big cats. FINALLY, that show is available on DVD. Denny generously donated a box of those DVDs to Big Cat Rescue’s gift shop. If you do not have one, I seriously recommend it. In fact, this year, everyone, on my Christmas list is getting one for Christmas, if the gift shop does not run out of them before then.
