We had a great day today. Lots of great Volunteers and Interns.
Food prep was done early.
Thanks to Steph C., Alyssa, and Vanessa for weed-eating and mowing along the lake bank behind Max and Maryann and Hoover!! Also, they cleaned up around food prep and the hospital.
Thanks to Bonnie for cleaning the Windsong hospital from top to bottom for Gabby’s surgery tomorrow!!
Thanks to Des and Sue R for giving out snacks and feeding some of the picky cats!
Angie Gabor’s Coordinator Notes for Saturday, 2/10/18
Oh what a day!! It was a warm one today.
We had a great number of incredible volunteers that helped feed, clean, and do tours. We got Feeding tour and cleaning sign-offs done.
Today, Gabby was in the hospital where a large mass was removed. She did great and will now recover in the outside hospital enclosure for two weeks. Our awesome Extreme Explorers sent Gabby a beautiful Get Well Card and gave us chocolate!!!
Overall it was a Beautiful day, full of great people that love our cats!
Lynda Licht’s Coordinator Notes for Sunday, 2/11/18
Volunteers answered the call for help and we had a great crew show up. Some dependable long-term volunteers like Honey and MaryLou were first to answer the call. It was a bit of a warm day so keepers cleaning needed to stay hydrated with Gatorade. Rebecca stocked the fridge in the Leopard Lounge with several bottles and some snacks.
We were sold out on tours and we even added a fourth 3:00 pm tour. So many guests having a great time here. What a great opportunity for us to teach about issues facing big cats.
Gabby was awake and ate and took her meds like a champ. A little while later we let her out of the transport cage and into the hospital recovery cage and she was anxious to go. Still a bit wobbly but doing well.
Jen R did the Keeper Tour and had a lot of leftover enrichment so she took 5 red shirts out and handed it out. It made the cats’ day and the red shirts who don’t normally get to see that were happy to see the cats so happy. The cats love getting extra enrichment.
Jen R also made more cicles of various kinds. Rebecca also made a bunch of smaller cicles in the Silk yogurt cups for Gabby as these fit nicely thru the 2×4. Gabby will receive cicles daily while she’s in the recovery cage.
We put Epakitin in capsules for Hoover.
Intern Steph took her Enrichment Class and is looking forward to her first observation. Intern Emma took her map test and aced it. Newly yellow keeper Bridget took her Cougar Cleaning Class and had a great first time cleaning that section.
Brittany Mira did some photographs with our lovely volunteers for gift shop products. There’s always something new going on. There was also a film crew taking some footage and shots of our gorgeous cats.
Bridget, Bethaney and Dede went around and picked up all sticks, limbs, fronds, etc along the tour path. Later in the day Rebecca, Brittany, and Bethany worked on Manny’s cage – clearing the roof and raking the interior – while he’s in FunCation. Won’t he have fun remarking everything when he returns home!![/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Some FYIs” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Open%20Sans%20Condensed%3A300%2C300italic%2C700|font_style:300%20light%20regular%3A300%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]Drinks & Snacks for Volunteers – If you would like to send drinks and snacks for the volunteer keepers and interns you can send them to the sanctuary (Smile.Amazon will drop ship them for you) or you can donate at the secure link on https://BigCatRescue.org/donate/
Did You Know? YOU can take the same training classes our keepers and interns take? We put the training classes online at https://ZooCollege.com for everyone to check them out. Do YOU have what it takes to be a big cat keeper here? Find out, or just take the classes for fun. It is only $9 per month, stop any time. Not sure? You take 3 free lessons before deciding.
Ball Pit for Foster Kittens – Recently Keeper Karma, who oversees the domestic foster kitten program, requested an item for the kittens. Viewer Robin Frye saw the request and purr-chased the item and it has arrived at the sanctuary. THANK YOU for helping us provide for and prepare these foster kittens for their futures.
New Photos Coming – Keeper MaryLou Geis has sent LaWanna a bunch of new photos of several of the cats that you requested new photos of. Those will be posting over the next few days on all the social media sites. Be sure to comment on them and let her know her efforts are appreciated.
Gabrielle’s Saggy Belly Skin – There has been some discussion on viewer posts about Gabby’s saggy tummy skin. Keep in mind she is a very old tiger and had saggy belly skin before her surgery. The saggy skin you see is not where her surgery was at. Due to the hair being shaved off of the surgery area and the skin in the surgery area pulled tighter it may be making the saggy belly skin look saggier when in fact, that saggy belly skin is exactly the same as it was before surgery. Again, that saggy skin area is not where her surgery was.
Keep in mind, when animals, including humans, get old we lose muscle mass. Our skin sags, our bones protrude and our gait slows.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Valentine’s Day Shopping on Smile.Amazon.com” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Open%20Sans%20Condensed%3A300%2C300italic%2C700|font_style:300%20light%20regular%3A300%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]Did You Know? Every time you make your normal purr-chases on Amazon you could be donating to the cats at NO COST TO YOU!
When you make your regular or holiday purr-chases at Amazon, then Amazon will make a donation to Big Cat Rescue without it costing you a single cent extra.
YES, THAT’s CORRECT!!
You can automatically help feed our cats at NO COST TO YOU when you select Big Cat Rescue, Corp as your charity on Amazon Smile and shop Amazon Smile instead of Amazon.com.
Everything at Amazon Smile is exactly the same as you are used to at Amazon — same exact products and prices. If you have a Prime account, it will still be there. The ONLY difference is that .5% of your purchases are automatically donated by Amazon to Big Cat Rescue – ZERO cost to you, but it sure adds up for the cats.
It is easy to set up. Once you do, instead of going to Amazon.com to shop, in the future you just go to Smile.Amazon.com.
To sign up for Smile just go to BigCatRescue.org/smile and log in with your usual Amazon ID and password.

The best web quality cams are those provided by Explore.org. Those cover Andy & Seth at Tiger Lake, Nikita Lioness, Vacation Rotation, the Kitten Cabana etc.
We also have a few lesser quality nest cams pointing at Joseph’s den, the hospital recovery cats, and more.
Find all those links at BigCatCams.com Nest cams pointing at Gabrielle and Babycakes have been added to this page as well. (Thank you to the viewers who asked for Babycakes’ cam to be added there.)
Did You Know? All the web cams have a snapshot feature you can use to take snapshots?
Did You Know? You can join our Official Facebook Group to see snapshots from the nest cams such as Babycakes, Noel, Gabby, Joseph, etc that your fellow viewers have snapped and posted there?
