Big Cat Updates

Kathyrn Stapleton’s Coordinator Notes for Monday, 2/12/18

Had a good amount of volunteers today. We were maxed out for tours in the afternoon.  So many great opportunities to chat with visitors about big cat issues.

Thanks to MC and Vanessa for staying to clean up Priya’s enclosure for when she comes home from vacation.

Thanks to the interns for getting cleaning and most of food prep done before they had to rush over for lots of tours.

Picky cats ate ok.

Gabby is doing well and has been eating and taking her meds well. She has access to the entire hospital cage she is walking better today.

That is it for me.  ~Kathryn

REMINDER:  If you want to connect with us in Instant Messenger to get notifications of events and get a new photo of the cats every few days join our bot at https://m.me/bigcatrescue

Big Cat Fact - Jaguar

The Jaguar is much stockier animal than its cousin the leopard. It also has shorter legs and tail – giving it more of a pit bull type appearance.

Big Cat Quiz

A few days ago Carole tested an idea of making a fun cat quiz.  If the numbers are an indication, it seems we should do more of these.  825 people took the following quiz.  If you have not done it yet, give it a try and see what you think.

People Often Ask

People often ask us what we think about various facilities.

We believe in good sanctuaries working together to not only rescue cats but also in promoting things that will end the abuse and exploitation of big cats.  When we are asked about good sanctuaries we do not hesitate to praise the good things they are doing.  However, sometimes, the facilities people ask us about we cannot praise them but instead need to expose wrongdoing.

Recently, several people have asked what we think about Dew Haven.

Despite their name, DEW Haven is not a legitimate sanctuary. Although the heavily-edited Animal Planet reality show “Yankee Jungle” portrayed the Mount Vernon, Maine facility as a loving refuge for animals, DEW is a self-proclaimed exotic animal breeding farm and private zoo with a decades-long history of animal welfare violations, illegal wildlife trafficking, public safety issues, and deceptive behavior.

Over the past 15 years, DEW Haven has been cited for over 54 violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. State investigators have described conditions there as “deplorable” and “untenable” and have seized several animals from the facility while recommending the revocation of its permits.

Speaking up by venting on social media helps everyone feel better, but what will REALLY HELP STOP ABUSE and EXPLOITATION is speaking up directly to lawmakers!  Lawmakers are not reading what is posted in social media comments on posts of people they do not know.

If you want to make a difference, then speak up WHERE lawmakers will actually HEAR YOU!

Do YOU care enough to speak up in a way that your voice can actually make a difference?

If things that go on at unaccredited facilities bothers you, please take the time to make the Call of the Wild.  The abuse and exploitation will NOT STOP UNTIL YOU SPEAK UP and ask everyone you know to speak up as well.

Make a difference!  Make the Call of the Wild, as lawmakers will hear that!  It is SO EASY to do at BigCatAct.com.

Foster Kitten Update

Keeper Karma sent me a note saying the kitten named Monkey has been adopted and went to live with his furever family.

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

The “I Smile Back” tee design is now available in long sleeve.  There are various colors to choose from.

Howard Baskin always smiles at strangers as his way of generating a little more love in the Universe. He inspired this design called "I Smile Back" as a way for people wearing the tee to inspire those who see it to smile. Cindy illustrated that idea with our "smiling" Natalia the Amur Leopard. The proceeds go to funding the freedom fight for exotic cats. What's not to smile about?
I Smile Back Long Sleeved Tee is a great conversation starter.

Get your “I Smile Back Long Sleeved Tee at at: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079NJNJ4C?ref_=pe_2196150_146773810
