Florida: Jaguar born at Brevard Zoo in Melbourne

Welcome to this adorable jaguar cub – the first to be born at the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Fla. The June 27 birth was also a first for mother Masaya, who moved to the zoo from the Palm Beach Zoo a couple of years ago. Dad is Brevard’s Xinca. The breeding program is part of a bid to save the species. The zoo still doesn’t know the cub’s sex because experts advise against handling the babies during the first weeks of life so they develop a strong bond with their mothers. You’ll be able to see the cub sometime in September. Directions: The zoo is 1/2 mile east of I-95 at exit 191 on Wickham Road, Melbourne, about 45 minutes from Orlando International Airport.
