Important! – More melamine tainted glutens imported from China

I could not find the names of the pet food companies that purchased the new tainted melamine glutens – but I have found the FDA documents confirming that melamine tainted glutens have entered the U.S. from China again and a FDA alert…”Detention without physical examination of all vegetable protein products from China for animal or human food use due to the presence of melamine and/or melamine analogs”.

Here is the link for the FDA alert:

http://www.fda.gov/ora/fiars/ora_import_ia9929.html

I have to tell you – now that I have run across this FDA alert (found it this morning – it is dated 1/7/08) – now it makes sense of all the new reports I’ve heard of and read about pets getting sick. I continue to feel very strongly that any pet owner who is feeding their pet a food or treat with any ingredient that comes from China is taking a huge risk. And I also feel that any pet owner that is feeding their pet a food or treat with a gluten ingredient (corn gluten, rice gluten, and so forth) or a vegetable protein (soy protein, rice protein) is taking a huge risk. These ingredients are typically imported from China – red flag, red flag, big red flag!

Please look at your pet’s food and treat labels. Read the brief FDA alert (link above) and if you see any ingredient listed in the alert in the food or treats you are currently giving your pet listed – stop feeding that food. I would typically tell you to switch to a new food slowly – however, considering the number of sick pets being reported and the FDA alert – I would recommend stop feeding that food or treat immediately.

Per the FDA alert – here are the products listed:

Wheat Gluten

Rice Gluten

Rice Protein

Rice Protein Concentrate

Corn Gluten

Corn Gluten Meal

Corn By-Products

Soy Protein

Soy Gluten

Soy Meal

Mung Bean Protein

It is very sad that the FDA has not issued a recall for the pet foods that purchased and used the new tainted imported glutens. I have heard that the FDA will not release the information of which pet food lines purchased from this importer. I don’t think that’s fair or even ethical considering the history of melamine and U.S. pets. But it is what we are dealing with. I also don’t think it’s fair or ethical for the pet food manufacturers who purchased the now detained glutens to not step up and tell the pet owning public their products might be tainted. If they ever want the public to trust them again – they MUST hold themselves accountable for their actions and their mistakes.

For the pet food manufacturers and the Pet Food Institute members that are subscribers to this newsletter…C’mon! Step up! For those manufacturers that are responsible and don’t put glutens or Chinese imported ingredients in your foods – how about you stepping forward to AAFCO and PFI and develop a method to hold the bad guys accountable? Believe me, the trust of your company and products is being damaged every single time any manufacturer acts reckless and imports such risky materials from known risky sources. If you are a ‘good guy’ – then you need to help by demanding changes in your own industry. Pet owners shouldn’t have to do this – but believe me, we will. I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Please be careful – examine all ingredients of everything you feed your pet. There are really good foods and treats out there – you just have to look a little to find them.

Help Big Cat Rescue and learn the Truth about Pet Food! Nutrition is one of the most neglected areas of pet care. Modern veterinary science tells us that the average size dog (30 pounds) should have a life span of 25 years and the average size cat should have a life span of 30 years. Sadly, we lose them far earlier. Genetics, environment, and nutrition – or lack of nutrition – all plays a role in the life expectancy of your pet. Improve your pet’s diet – improve their health and extend their life span.

Pet Food meat ingredients come from two VERY different categories or classifications…Pet grade/quality ingredients (which can be diseased or sick animals or animal parts rejected for use in human food) or Human grade/quality ingredients.
