India: Caged leopard killed as officials stand by

Kolkata, July 17: A full-grown male leopard died inside a cage at a rescue centre in West Bengal after hundreds of tea garden workers poked it constantly with sharp weapons and bamboo sticks, media reports said Tuesday.

The leopard started bleeding profusely in the small cage but no forest department official took steps to stop the torture or provide treatment to the injured animal, the reports said.

The leopard had been taken to the rescue centre after it walked into a trap at the Betguri tea estate in Malbazar area Friday. It died Sunday.

Divisional forest officer Tapas Das, however, said the leopard was undergoing treatment at the rescue centre and it died of cardiac arrest.

Two weeks ago a girl child of a tea garden worker who went missing was found dead in the tea estate area. It was evident from her external injuries that wild beats had nibbled the body.
