It’s Hero of the Year Time

It's Hero of the Year Time

12/21/2009

Congratulations!

If you watched "Animal Cops" on Friday night, you saw the announcement of Animal Planet's2009 Hero of the Year. It's Scott Lope, director of operations at Big Cat Rescue in Florida. This amazing organization works to better the lives of displaced lions, tigers, leopards, bobcats, cougars and so many more of the big cats we know. Some of them land there after people discover that, duhhhhh, wild cats do NOT make good house pets, and these gorgeous creatures are removed from unhappy, inappropriate homes. Others have lost their natural habitat due to our changing world.

Whatever path they take, these big cats have found the perfect sanctuary for a safe and rewarding new life.  And Scott puts in long days to make that happen. For more than 10 years, he's routinely spent up to 15 hours seeing to the needs of abandoned, orphaned or neglected big cats. (Oh, and how those cats appreciate it–look at the face of that white tiger standing near Scott in the Hero of the Year link, above: that's a SMILE! )

Scott's mission, to educate people not only about big cats but all animals in the wild, inspires others worldwide. Kids send money, volunteers visit just to work for awhile, all to respect and preserve the lives of big cats and other critters in need.

To All the Others, Too…

The Mole salutes Scott for his dedication and genuine affection for the glorious wild cats, whose giant paws and regal manner leave an elegant imprint on our hearts, and our world. And a giant paws up to ALL the Hero of the Year nominees. Their worthy organizations, their individual dedication to bettering the lives of animals, and those who love them, deserve applause too. Everyone who gives time to animals is a winner. Just ask the animals, who know better than we do.
