Cat Updates

Hoover is doing well.  Yesterday, he was left in the transport cage overnight because he was too loopy to climb down out of the transport cage to the recovery cage.  Before daybreak he pooped in there and a cam viewer called Carole before daybreak so she came in to clean it up.  Hoover is now in recovery cage and his incision looks good.

Nirvana was on the observation chart today for a squinty eye.  She was seen by Dr. Liz Wynn yesterday for her left eye.  Seems that she has a bit of an ulcer.  She will remain inside the recovery hospital for 3 to 5 days so she can get eye drops.

The green is the stain to help the vet see the ulcer

Frosty Serval is doing really well.  After his recent health issue many of you have been asking about him.  THANK YOU for caring.  The Facebook Live Video below has a clip of him getting a treat, getting flea prevention, and hissing at Kathryn.   Find Frosty at video marker -36:36

Dryden and Kewlona are now neighbors to Pharaoh.  Pharaoh is not certain he likes that, yet.  We will watch that for a while.

Zeus gets fed from a feeding stick every day because that is really the way eat will the most.  Watch the Live Facebook Video Replay below of Zeus being fed.

In the last few days the following cats have caught the ibis birds: TJ, Cameron, Zabu, & Andy  Happy the cats get to do something ‘wild’ but also sad for the birds, too.

Watch Seth Tiger ham it up for 10 News as our Director of Outreach, Jen Leon, tells the world that the circus tigers deserve homes in sanctuaries like Big Cat Rescue and should not be sold off to other circuses.  http://www.wtsp.com/mb/news/what-s-next-for-greatest-show-on-earth-/386596202

 Yesterday’s Mini Projects

Extra Guests:  Karma Hurworth added a new post to Important Updates:  Thank You!!!

Thank you to everyone who stayed to help with tours, whether you were planning on it or not, to all of you who were flexible as we shifted people around to cover tours, and to those of you who helped with closing chores so interns could get back over to the keeper side and help finish things up there. Because of you, we were able to add another tour and accommodate over 90 guests! This is all money for our cats that we wouldn’t have been able to bring in if not for you. Thanks again for a successful tour day!

Freezer:  Our freezer can store 17,000 pounds of meat.  We feed out about 500 pounds of meat every day, seven days a week.  New heavy duty shelves were added to make the freezer more organized and make it easier for volunteers to sort the meat for that gets moved each day from the freezer to the cooler to thaw..

Coffee Makers:  YAY!!  Carole brought in a coffee maker for the gift shop and for food prep area.  Volunteers and staff frequently arrive before daybreak and are here until really late so they are going to certainly enjoy the new coffee makers.

Hoover’s Den:  While Hoover is in the recovery cage we are doing some work in his enclosure.  One of the projects there is we are digging out the current dirt in his den and adding new dirt.

Monthly Flea Prevention:  The cats get monthly flea prevention.  This is a big task and big expense every month.  You can help cover those expenses at BigCatRescue.org/donate/  Here is an older video showing you all the prep work that goes into doing this.

 Global Cat News

ONE:   DEA extends ban on leopard hunting in South Africa for  2017

Shocking video footage has today emerged of a Siberian tiger being tightly restrained in a circus in Yiyang, China, allowing customers to sit on the animal and take photographs. An announcer in the video can be heard claiming: “Taking a photo with the tiger can ensure success in your career and prosperity.” Such beliefs are particularly prevalent as Chinese New Year approaches. China’s new Wildlife Protection Law came into place on January 1, 2017 but, far from contributing to the conservation of tigers, it encourages the use of tigers and other endangered species for commercial purposes, including “public exhibition and performances” such as this and allowing trade in skins of the tigers when they die. With laws that treat tigers as commodities, China has fallen far behind India in wild tiger conservation. Between seven and 20 wild tigers survive in China, while in India – where tigers are still revered and tiger tourism is a significant source of income – there are approximately 2,226 wild tigers, more than half of the world population.

Two months ago, an unidentified man transported two frozen tigers to the farm (one whole tiger and another one sliced into two parts). After that, another unidentified man transported the serow to the farm on a motorbike.

According to Vietbao.vn, Nghe An EP started tracking a network trading/transporting wildlife from Lao to Vietnam. Nguyen Huu Hue was identified as the leader of the network. Hue often bought tigers that were killed, gutted and frozen in Lao and transported to Vietnam by land route. Hue kept the tigers in his cow farm or in the house his neighbors. An investigation on Hue’s network resulted in the raid on 13/01.
