Zeus: We mentioned recently how the cats frequently change what their “favorite” food is. Well, yesterday Zeus decided red chunk meat was his favorite and he did not want his chicken or pork. Later in the day he was brought more food and again chose only the red chunk meat. Then with his evening eye drops he ate even more red chunk meat. He ate well and ate plenty, but I had to chuckle at how he knows if he refuses one thing the keepers will bring him something different. Do your domestic cats sometimes decide they like one food better than another and then change their mind a few days later?
Seth is having a blast in Hoover’s 2+ acre lake front enclosure while Hoover is in the hospital recovery cage. You can see how his first day went by scrolling down this page to the “Viewer Video” section to see replays of his first day and his first attempts to get into Tiger Lake. You can watch him all day long on the high quality Explore.org/bigcatrescuse “Tiger Lake” streaming cam.
Gabrielle is having a great time on her first vacation in the 2.5 acre Vacation Rotation enclosure. She was a little unsure at first but once she started exploring she had a great time. Check out the videos below in the “Viewer Videos” section. You can watch her, as well, on the high quality Explore.org/bigcatrescue “Vacation Rotation” streaming cam.
Mac Cougar refused to go home from FunCation yesterday, so we left the tunnels up all night. He still wouldn’t go. Remember, Mac is really old (20 yrs), this was his first time in the new FunCation enclosure, and old cats can tend to be a little more cautious of something new. Two weeks ago to get him to go on FunCation his favorite keeper, Matt, had to leave his regular job, drive to Big Cat Rescue on his lunch hour to coax Mac through the tunnels into the new FunCation enclosure. Once there, Mac thoroughly enjoyed his vacation. However, he was not sure about going back through the tunnels again to go home. This morning at 7:22 am Gale got him to follow his breakfast back to his home Cat-a-Tat.
Reise Cougar says she’s ready for her turn at FunCation. Reise turned 22 years old on January 1st.

The Picky Boys
Joseph: Ate all his regular meal and then more later in the day a couple days ago, but then yesterday decided to be picky and not as hungry. He still ate well, just not as much as we wanted him to. He ate his mush and his turkey but refused red meat. Yesterday he ate only about half of what we wanted him to eat but he seemed full and content. He did take his meds like a good boy. He wasn’t very hungry at breakfast today, so as usual the keepers will continue to work extra hard to get this picky old boy to eat more later in the day. In the wild they would not always eat every day where here at Big Cat Rescue they are fed every day, the older cats or picky cats are fed more than once a day, every day.
Hoover: A couple days ago he ate over 12 pounds, yesterday not quite as much, and today he wouldn’t eat much of his breakfast. Keepers will continue to offer him multiple small meals. His recovery is going well.
TJ: He still wants fed off the feeding stick and he actually does eat more when fed that way than he does if his food is put on the feeding tile in the lockout. Keepers will keep offering him his multiple small meals each day. YOU CAN watch live on the Tiger Lake Streaming Cam. This morning he ate almost 7 pounds of red meat for breakfast, and as usual the keepers will take him more food later in the day. If he eats that much at his next meal today the keepers just might do a Happy Dance all the way back to the food prep building. They get downright giddy and excited when they can get the picky boys to eat 14 pounds a day.
Cameron: He ate about half of his breakfast today so he, too, will have the keeper running back and forth offering PURR-sonal “room service” later in the day.
These four picky eaters run the keepers back and forth to food prep more than all the other almost 70+ cats combined do. It is a labor of love.
We have been releasing the Big Cat Updates page around 3:00 pm ET, however, we recently noticed that it has more traffic when we release it earlier in the day. Therefore, we will be trying to release it earlier. The goal will be to try to release it between noon and 1:00. Please note, the key word there is TRY 😉 We will then start adding things for the rest of the day onto the following day’s page. As always, we will announce the updates release on social media sites such as Facebook, G+, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, etc.
QUESTION To Viewers: Speaking of social media pages, in the comments below can you let us know what other social media besides Facebook, G+, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest everyone is using these days?

VIDEO: Moving Seth Tiger 1/26/2017
Seth Tiger has moved from Vacation Rotation to Hoover‘s cage on Tiger Lake at explore.org/bigcatrescue Hoover can’t use it for a while because Dr.’s orders are to keep his privates clean and DRY, so Seth will make the most of the beautiful lakefront space while Hoover is recovering. More about Seth at BigCatRescue.org/Seth Be sure to set your FB notifications to get our notifications first so you don’t miss Gabrielle Tiger going to Vacation Rotation today.
The four new tigers are pretty nervous tigers. In time, once they learn the routines here they will settle down. The tigers who have been here for a while are no longer bothered about hopping in the transport wagon because they know there is something good at the end of the ride, like new territory etc. In this video you get to see Hoover’s enclosure from the back side. You get to see Seth investigating Hoover’s little jungle. This is a view of Hoover’s cage you probably have not seen before.
The smaller private tours can sometimes walk on the wooden walkway back there.

By now you are probably getting tired of hearing about this Valspar Tournament contest, and we are sorry to continue being a pest with it, but that $65,000 will go a long ways for the cats. We cannot win that without each of you continuing to share, continuing to ask just one friend a day to vote for Big Cat Rescue. Let me explain why we are asking for your help, every day.
FYI: There are several PGA Tournaments participating in the race to win the $65,000. Valspar is just one of those tournaments, and it is the one we are participating in. After those first 10,000 votes are gotten in the Valspar Tournament, the race against the other participating tournaments to win the rest of the $65,000 will be in full force. To win that leg of the contest the cats will need literally thousands more votes. We have until March 11th. The other tournaments will begin turning up the heat very soon. Getting an early lead, like YOU are giving the cats, can help a great deal. However, as the other tournaments start picking up steam the cats can quickly fall behind.
Vote Numbers Update: The Valspar Tournament has 9,114 votes and of those 8,070 are for Big Cat Rescue’s Robert McGivney. That means YOUR votes and YOUR shares have earned the cats $8,070 so far.
REMEMBER: The first 10,000 votes in the contest are worth about $1 each. There are still 886 votes of that first 10,000 up for grabs that yours shares can help win for the cats.
You ALL Are AMAZING!!!!!!! The cats have made it this far because of YOUR EFFORTS!!! We truly appreciate each one of you who has stepped up to the plate to help the cats!!!! Thank you for your continued understanding and continued support while the cats compete in this Valspar PGA Golf Tournament.
This species, like the clouded leopard, is one of those that is somewhere between the small cats and the great cats in that it can’t purr like the small cats and it can’t roar like the true great cats. It makes a happy sound similar to the tiger’s chuffing.
Adaptations for high altitude life include an enlarged nasal cavity, shortened limbs, well developed chest muscles, long hair with a dense, wooly undercoat, and a tail over 3 feet long. They use their tails like a coat in the winter, wrapping it around themselves when lying or sitting for added warmth.
They have round pupils like the great cats, varying in color from pale yellow to green-grey.

People Often Ask: Why do we keep talking about the cub petting issue so frequently?
We realize many of YOU have heard it a dozen time, but there are many people who have never heard and do not yet know why it is so wrong. If the abuse is to stop we need to reach as many people as possible. Thanks to all of you being so great at sharing our photos, videos, posts, and pages there is always a steady stream of newcomers. By the way, THANK YOU for those continued shares!!! We want ALL newcomers to feel welcome and to have the chance to learn about how they can help stop the abuse. That often starts with learning about the root cause of so much big cat suffering, the cub petting industry.
Another Question People Ask: “How can I explain the cub petting issue in just a short summary?:
Some exhibitors will let you pet or take a photo with a tiger cub for a fee. This is what we call a “play to pay scheme”. This happens at parks, reserves, preserves, zoos, pseudo-sanctuaries, or whatever they call the facility where the animals are kept. Other exhibitors have mobile exhibits that travel regularly, setting up in malls, parking lots, and fairs.
Cubs are taken from their mothers soon after birth, a torment to both cub and mother, and are then carted around to strange settings to be groped by strangers hour after hour, depriving them of much needed rest. Federal regulations currently permit cub petting after 4 weeks of age. Florida law allows contact with a cub if it weighs less than 25 pounds. Some exhibitors extend the petting time by underfeeding the cub or giving it pills to cause diarrhea, thereby keeping the cub as small as possible. They are coerced to cooperate by being crudely held up by their scruff or starved and then bottled fed during the photo shoot. Some are drugged to calm their natural wild behavior. Behind the scenes undercover footage has documented intentional abuse and neglect at some of the most popular pay to play schemes in the country.
Once the cubs are too old or too big for petting, they may be sold, given away, or returned to the breeder (if they were leased) to spend the rest of their lives, up to 20 years, caged in miserable conditions. It is suspected that many of the cubs that “disappear” once they are too old to be petted are sold and slaughtered for their parts. The United States is the second-largest destination market for illegally trafficked wildlife in the world. It has been shown that the trade of captive wildlife parts, whether legal or illegal, drives demand for poached parts (parts from animals in the wild).
