Reise Cougar said goodbye to her 24-year-old body today and is off on her next journey. Thank you, everyone, who made her final years, her best years. Her sweet conversations will be missed. Cold and windy day today but everybody pulled together and we got it all done. Lots of tours went out and everyone seemed to have a good time. We got some operant, tour, and feeding sign-offs were done. Thanks to Amanda, Barbara, Candice, Fred, Tanya, and Susana for knocking out food prep. Thanks to all the keepers that came out to brave the cold to help the cats and thanks to the interns and partners and gift shop people who kept all of the guests organized and happy.

Amanda Tiger is 22 years old(2018) and was rescued by Big Cat Rescue in 2011. She came with her siblings Andre, who is still with us and Arthur, who sadly passed last year. Amanda is the more reserved of the siblings and prefers to keep her distance from people. It was noticed by her keepers that Amanda had a sore on her foot, which on closer inspection turned out to be an ingrown dew claw. The claw needed to be removed, so Dr. Justin came to sedate her and take a closer look.
We avoid sedating our cats unless it is 100% necessary, as the sedation can be very hard on their bodies, especially in older cats. On occasions like this, when a cat has to be sedated, we make the most of the time and carry out as many exams and tests as possible. This usually involves but is not limited to, blood tests, dental checks, and an overall physical exam. Take a look as Amanda is seen by the vet!

What a special day! Today we celebrate Thurston and Lovey turning 11 years old!
They were part of the Gilligans Island – Kansas rescue and at one time only had a cramped cage of about 5’x13′ to share. Now they spend their days enjoying their huge enclosure with many dens and platforms.
