Big Cat Updates

TJ was seen by the Vets, Bloodwork looked good, Trimmed all his claws, One was grown in so he will be in the concrete hospital for a few days till it heals.

Chaos was spayed and will be inside for 10 days, Then she can be with Cyrus. He will have access to both cages while she is inside. The owner responded to Carole and said Cyrus is 6 and Chaos is 8.5 and not from same breeder, meaning they are not siblings after all. Chaos weighs 21 pounds.

Angie’s Coordinator Report for Sunday 6/18/2017

Today we had a tight crew.  Unfortunately we didn’t get to do any projects.
We did get feeding sign offs and lots of tour sign offs.

What are sign offs?  This means someone completed a video and text section of their training program and then was worked with by a qualified trainer and were signed off as having completed and passed that section of their training.

Facebook Live Video Replays

Chaos the 8 year old caracal just arrived a week or so ago and we are spaying her in hopes that she and Cyrus can be reunited. Watch more after this broadcast ends at http://explore.org/live-cams/player/big-cat-rescue-windsong-memorial-cat-hospital

Questions and Answers from the live video feed

Q:  How old is Chaos?
A: She is 8.5 years old, according to her previous owner. We thought she was 6.

Q: Does she seem to miss cyrus
A: Chaos and Cyrus don’t pay ANY attention to each other.

Q: If a cat comes to you that’s injured and you help them, do you keep them there or release them back into the wild (their home) when they are better?
A: If they come from the wild we do everything we can to get them back to the wild. BigCatRescue.org/bobcat-rehab

Q: Where are the gloves?
A: Gloves are put on when it is time for a sterile field. Learn more at BigCatRescue.org/gloves/

Q: Will TJ’s prints be put on shirts?
A: Probably.

Q: Why are you painting her paws?
A: https://bigcatrescue.org/paw/

Q: Why are you spaying her?
A: We make it a policy to spay females when they arrive if they are young enough and healthy enough, as it will prevent a lot of later infections that could kill her. Also, if she is able to be reunited with Cyrus we want to make sure there is no breeding.

Chaos’ Surgery (Graphic)

Questions and Answers from the live video feed

Q: Will her mate also be neutered?
A: If it looks like they can be reunited, then yes, he will have to be neutered first.

Q: How big will the scar be?
A: You will be amazed what a little incision Dr J will make and how quickly it will be done. He’s done thousands of spays at his real job working for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay

Q: What about the Corona virus?
A: There will be more blood tests int he future to find out.

A: We have gotten new information on the cats and as it turns out they are not brother and sister.

Q: Why are you spaying her if you don’t know yet if she can be reunited with Cyrus?
A: This will prevent her from having uterine infections later in life, when it would be much more serious surgery.

Q: Are they siblings?
A: The owner responded to me and said Cyrus is 6 and Chaos is 8.5 and not from same breeder so they are not siblings after all.

Q: How long with Chaos be in the hospital?
A: Probably a couple weeks.

Q: Can Chaos be reunited with Cyrus if he still has corona virus and she doesn’t?
A: Cyrus does, Chaos doesn’t, so we have to wait on follow up blood work. There are more blood tests in their future before we make a decision.

Carole talks about Projects and waiting for TJ Tiger to go to sleep.

TJ Tiger Sees the Vets

Bringing TJ Tiger into the hospital to see the vets.

Q: Morning…when u guys dart him or sedate him ..how long does it last??
A: We have to keep them asleep for at least 45 min before offering a reversal. 3 hours is the max.

Q: How old is TJ?
A: TJ is 18.

TJ Tiger is 18 and a very poor eater. He was sedated last August, so we are doing follow up blood work and Xrays to see if there is more we can do for him. Watch more at http://explore.org/live-cams/player/big-cat-rescue-windsong-memorial-cat-hospital

Questions and Answers from the Live Video Feed

TJ had an ingrown claw, blood work, xrays.

They trimmed back the claw that was curling into his paw pad.

The only real issue is that he’s got terrible arthritis and spondylosis.  They found advanced spondylosis in the Xrays. More about that at https://www.spine-health.com/conditions/lower-back-pain/spondylosis-what-it-actually-means

Advanced spondylosis https://www.spine-health.com/conditions/lower-back-pain/spondylosis-what-it-actually-means accounts for TJ being so slow. The vets are thinking that his eating issues are probably not a big deal because he’s eating enough for his body’s level of activity. They don’t see a mass, and even if they did, they probably wouldn’t open up an 18 year old tiger. S

With a bad back he doesn’t use the trees to shed his claws on his own

They gave him fluids. Blood work wasn’t awful for an 18 yr old tiger

The vets are thinking that his eating issues are probably not a big deal because he’s eating enough for his body’s level of activity. They don’t see a mass. Saying he looks thin because of the muscle loss of old age, but that’s he’s in pretty good flesh otherwise and has actually gained weight over the past year. Dr Justin thinks TJ’s eating well, given his bad arthritis.

Q: Why aren’t they wearing gloves?
A: Gloves are put on when it is time for a sterile field. Learn more at BigCatRescue.org/gloves/

If you watch the videos from his rescue, you will see the Dr Liz Wynn helped on that rescue back in 2007. BigCatRescue.org/TJ

Meet Nikita Lioness, 500 pounds of frisky, at Big Cat Rescue

Questions and Answers from Live Video Feed:

Q: Is it true she prefers to be alone
A: Yes, that is true. She literally hates even seeing other cats and slam herself into the fence trying to get at them. We had to make her an enclosure behind the offices where she cannot see other cats.

Q: Are you sure she is a lion.
A: As far as we know she is all lion.

Q: Why does she move so slow.
A: She is very old. Just as with humans or other animals species when big cats get old they slow down. They also lose muscle mass and skin gets saggy, too.

Q: Why don’t you breed her to a healthy Bengal tiger to get big ligers:
A: Since lions and tigers do not exist in the same areas, this is not something that happens in the wild. It is done in captivity by disreputable carnies to produce a freak that ignorant people will pay to see. These cats suffer from many birth defects and usually die young. Because ligers are usually larger than either parent, it also puts the tigress at great risk in carrying the young and may require C-section deliveries or kill her in the process. When the public quits paying to see these unfortunate creatures, the evil people responsible for breeding them will stop this inhumane practice.
