Big Cat Updates

Devin Saari's Coordinator Notes for 6/19/2018

Great day today we had plenty of volunteers to get feeding and cleaning done in good time. A new big bed was put into Cam and Zabu's enclosure today. (Like Big Hank in Vacation Rotation)

We started working on Gilligan's other half of the enclosure but did not finish due to the thunder and lightning. The old sandbags were emptied and the sand is ready to be made into new sandbags. The rain held off until about 3:00 pm. We had 3 tours go out today but they came back early due to the weather

Cicle cats got their icy treats today. There was a drink delivery. We moved 7 water jugs into the leopard lounge for hurricane water supply

The den sitting on the slab is clean and ready for Gilligan.

That's all for today!

Carole Answers Questions

Some of you had asked some questions I didn't know the answers to so I compiled a list and emailed Carole.  Instead of typing a reply back that I could copy/paste she replied with this cool video.  In this video, Carole goes down the list of questions and answers them in great detail, one by one.

Here is the list of questions:

Bobcat Rehab Questions

  1. Any update on getting cameras back there?
  2. Is all the fence chain link so that baby bobs can't fit through like they could on the 2x4 or 4x4 wire?
  3. Do all the released bobcats have trail cams?
  4. Are more trail cams needed?
  5. Have any of the released cats recently been spotted?

Cat Health Updates:

  1. Cameron Lion
  2. Keisha Tiger
  3. Andre & Arthur, 22-year-old tiger brothers
  4. Breezy Bobcat
  5. Tiger Lilly Bobcat

Guatemala Rescue Questions:

  • What is the latest on the Guatemala cats?
  • What are the current things we are funding there?
  • Are we getting the three recently mentioned tigers?
  • It will be quite a while before cats coming here arrive but has the import paperwork started? Is this something we can or cannot keep people updated on?

More Recent Questions

How old do the rehab bobcat kittens need to be before they can go in the outside rehab cages?

  • Kathryn said typically they are between 10-12 weeks old weighing between 3-5 pounds and eating large whole prey rats when they go outside... however it is also assessed on a case by case basis since each cat can be so different in the process.

When will Noel Bobcat be released?

  • Noel Bobcat will be released VERY SOON!  The rehab team has found a place.  They hiked through the area to make sure it will be a good habitat with plenty of prey, water, and space to live wild and free.  A release date has been set up.
  • Join our Official Facebook Group at Facebook.com/groups/BigCatRescue so you can be one of the first to find out what the release date will be.

Some of you have also been asking for Noel Gear / Swag so Brittany & Jamie created some Noel Shirts.  See Them Now

Foster Kitten Update

Some of the kittens have presented signs of 'pink eye' so they must be kept home under close supervision, getting medications,  and remain separated from other kittens.  The Kitten Cabana has to be thoroughly cleaned and all toys sanitized.  The kittens will return to Kitten Cabana soon.  we are hoping the "Z" kittens will return to Kitten Cabana on Friday.  If you would like to help us cover the extra costs please give what you can at BigCatRescue.org/donate

GROSS or FUNNY - You Decide

Bobcat Rehab Update on June 19, 2018 - Echo is a quite feisty little spitfire of a bobcat kitten.  When I got this note from Carole I couldn't decide whether to cry for the rat, gag and say gross, or fall off my chairs laughing at that silly ornery wild bobcat kitten.

Kathryn's note said, "Echo made her own toy out of rat skin and fur.   She has been tossing this around all day. Talented at crafts!!"

Who is Echo?  Find out at http://bigcatrescue.org/echo/ (This page was updated today.)

Who is Winning - Hoover or Keisha?

To help raise funds for three conservation projects in the wild we are selling Swag / Gear for International Tiger Day again this year.

Among those special products are Hoover Beach Blankets and Keisha Beach Blankets.  So far Keisha is WAY AHEAD of Hoover as Hoover has only sold one, so far.

ACTION ALERT - Have YOU Spoken Up, Yet? Have YOU Shared this with Everyone You Know in Nebraska?

Nebraska’s mountain lions may once again be in the crosshairs. The proposed 2019 hunting season would allow 20% of the viable population in Pine Ridge to be killed! Worse yet, 640 hunting permits will be issued to hunt eight cats, meaning there will be 80 hunters per cat.

The proposed plan is sloppy and would only satisfy a small yet vocal group who would rather see these cats mounted on their walls than roaming in their state.

Nebraska residents, take action! Follow the link below to email the Deputy Director of Nebraska’s Game and Parks Commission and tell him that you oppose a 2019 mountain lion hunting season.

If you live outside Nebraska YOU CAN STILL HELP by posting this EVERYWHERE you can think of so that more Nebraska residents can find it. Post it on your social media pages, in Facebook groups, etc.

Change will NOT HAPPEN UNLESS YOU care enough to make it happen!  This issue NEEDS YOU VOICE, TODAY!
