Big Cat Updates

They’re Here!  They’re Here!

Cyrus and Chaos the Caracals, along with Zucari the Serval have arrived. Come along as they are released into their forever homes. Wear their gear to show your love and support for them https://big-cat-rescue.myshopify.com/search?q=cyrus 100% of the profits goes to caring for the cats!

Can We Count on Your Help For Their Transport Costs, Surgeries and Lifetime Care?

Chaos Cyrus Zucari Rescue ToteThe cats were owned by a hybrid breeder in Ohio who willingly surrendered 2 caracals and 1 serval to the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) when the agency discovered she owned the cats in violation of Ohio law.

The two Caracals were housed in a cage in the basement and had access to a small enclosures outside via a door, they were house together and are both intact.

The serval was housed in an out door dog kennel type cage with approximately two dozen hybrids and domestic cats.

All three cats were sedated on Monday morning for a basic exam to have blood drawn to be microchips and to get vaccinated.

They all traveled very well and were quiet except for when we had to stop to feed them or give them water and they would all hiss.

Meet 6 year old Cyrus (male) and Chaos (female) – oh boy, wonder if her name reflects her feisty purrsonality? Our keepers can’t wait to find out!

When ODA approached Carole about taking the cats and mentioned that two of them were caracals, she caught her breath and her thoughts immediately turned to our beautiful Sassy caracal, who recently passed in March 2017, and her lifelong companion Rusty caracal, who passed last September. It almost seems like Sassy and Rusty are up in heaven orchestrating our rescue of this new pair of caracals and helping them find their way to Big Cat Rescue so that these beautiful caracals can live out their lives in peace here too.

And the young serval is 2-year-old Zucari. He’s practically still a kitten and will be the youngest serval at the sanctuary.

All 3 cats will need to be spayed/neutered once they arrive. And we won’t know until our vets examine them if they have any other health issues that will need to be addressed.

If you want to be an integral, important part of rescuing Cyrus, Chaos and Zucari, we would be very grateful to receive your donations toward the cost of their transport, surgeries and lifetime care at our sanctuary. It is your donations that allow us to continue to be able to immediately say YES when we are asked to save exotic cats in need! THANK YOU!

 Letter to the Management

LETTER TO THE MANAGEMENT

Lori Duska Secretary to the CatsJune 6, 2016

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am very upset about something I overhead from a tour group yesterday. Someone mentioned that they had Biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Is this a new perk at Big Cat Rescue? Why wasn’t I asked? Why do the Biscuits get to go out for breakfast? Did they go to IHOP? I have been here longer, and I demand equal time!

I am tired of being the orange-headed stepchild at the sanctuary. I will no longer be ignored. I am going to start calling the ACLU (Animal Civil Liberties Union), NOWT (National Organization of Women Tigers), and Washington, DC, if I have to in order to get some attention

The discrimination here is awful and I have to deal with it every single day. Example: If Joseph roars, everyone says “Yay, Joseph roared!” If I roar, however, it’s “everybody run for the hills, Amanda’s in a mood.” Well, you would be, too, if you were ignored all the time. All day long all I hear is Bu, Bu, Bu. Just because she’s a blonde everyone oohs and aahs at her. I can’t spend all day posing and being cute like she does; I have two brothers I have to keep in line and they are a handful. I will say, though, that life has gotten a little better since Zeus moved in next door.

But back to the breakfast thing. I demand to see a schedule so I know when it’s my turn. And I don’t like gravy, but I would like some bacon and eggs and toast.

Sincerely,

Amanda Tiger
(Sent via Lori D., Secretary to the Cats)

Ever wonder what it’s like to be the CEO of Big Cat Rescue?

7:00 am flip on computer and brew a cup of coffee to begin answering the 100+ emails that came in over night because there will be another 100+ coming in today.

7:15 am post the most important big cat news from around the globe to Buffer to post throughout the day.

7:30 am post update to the Big Cat Attacks page about an African Serval wandering loose in Ontario, Canada.  A looooong way from home.

7: 35 am post condolences about two lions, who had originally been rescued with Hoover, who were poached in the sanctuary at Emoya.

7:45 am host LIVE feed from the Kitten Cabana on four FB channels and answer questions in real time for 15 minutes.

7:59 am check in with Jamie, who is on the road to rescue 2 caracals and a serval.  Reminding her to take video and share photos along the way.

8:08 am vet texts groups about Divinity Bobcat.  I’d send videos of her swollen elbows last night.  She wouldn’t eat yesterday either.

8:15 am host LIVE feed from Tiger Lake because Seth is swimming and no one wants to miss that.

8:30 deal with the fallout from google changing something and not telling me and now we have $1300 a day in AdWords grants that isn’t being used.  Try to resolve those issues with a volunteer group who is helping.

8:45 am called in to shake the hand of a VIP who is visiting from overseas.

8:46 am vet wants to see Divinity so I drive in to the sanctuary to help.

9:03 am find the VIP and briefly say “hello” and “welcome” and then excuse my brevity, because I have to catch a bobcat.  ( I really should think about how I word things like that so they don’t think cats are running loose!)

9:06 am Gale brings a crew to catch Divinity but she’s in a spot where we can’t get too her and have to rely on tricking her.

9:15 am I find a palm tree, about 3 feet high, ripped out of the ground, that was laying by the cage, so I put it in a bucket and ask Gale to plant it somewhere.

9:20 am Divinity Bobcat is safely contained in the squeeze cage for the vet to see.

9:38 am made second cup of coffee and made a protein shake for breakfast.

The rest of the day was non stop action until about 8PM with texts up until 10PM regarding the rescue of the caracals and serval.  Bed at 10:30PM and slept like the dead…as usual.
