Leopard skin, tiger bones seized
JALPAIGURI, Feb. 13: Sashastra Seema Bal jawans today recovered a leopard skin and 4.5 kg of Royal Bengal Tiger bones near the Bhutan Gate at Jaigaon. A Bhutanese boy was allegedly carrying the body parts of the animal.
The jawans detected the boy carrying two bags enter India through Bhutan Gate this morning. Scared at seeing the men in uniform close by, the boy dropped the two bags and fled back to Bhutan. The SSB jawans opened the bags and found that the bag had animal parts in it. The SSB commander, 30 battalion, Mr BB Gurung said that they handed over the articles to the Hamiltonganj range officer, Mr Madhurmilan Ghosh.
“It seems that poachers are now using children for the trade,” Mr Ghosh said.
The state forest minister, Mr Ananta Roy, said that the department is seriously concerned with what is happening at Jaigaon. “Jaigaon has turned into a den of poachers. We are keeping a strict watch on the situation. I will have a word with the forest officials after today’s seizure,” he said.
