Letter: Iberville official’s remark out of line

I continue to find it sad and typical of Louisiana small-town politics that the idea of keeping a caged tiger in a truck stop parking lot is acceptable in Iberville Parish.

When a Florida animal rights activist complains of the inhumane living conditions of “Tony” the tiger, I must believe her.

To make matters worse, the so-called leadership in Iberville Parish, led by parish President Mitch Ourso, commented publicly that the animal welfare advocate claiming Tony lives in an unsuitable environment is “not a resident here. I think she’s gone too far.” That is out of line.

When Hurricane Katrina nearly destroyed New Orleans, most Americans did not experience the storm. They did, however, react nationwide to help this region. One does not have to live near the problem to have an opinion about it.

Apparently, Ourso thinks differently and is obviously protecting the good-ole-boy who owns the truck stop and his tiger-toy.

Ourso needs to stop thinking of votes and simply do the right thing for an animal that cannot speak for itself, but that takes political maturity.
