Lion gives birth to cubs at N.C. Zoo

POSTED: 2:46 pm EDT October 24, 2006

ASHEBORO, N.C. — The North Carolina Zoo’s female lion has given birth to three cubs.

Sala gave birth on Monday morning. It was the second lion-cub birthing at the park in more than 20 years and the first since two female cubs were born in 2004.

Zoo officials said it will be several weeks before they can determine the sex of the young cubs, but they said all three appear healthy. Zoo keepers are staying at a distance while the new mother adjusts and are monitoring the cubs inside the den on closed-circuit television.

Officials said the cubs will not be exhibited to the public until at least spring, but zoo visitors will be able to see the little ones on monitors being installed at the lion exhibit this weekend.
