Louisiana zoo plans to get pair of breeding jaguars

SPARC funds help finance Alexandria Zoo upgrades

Most of the approximately $2.5 million expected to be spent on Alexandria Zoo’s South American exhibit will come from money borrowed to pay for the city’s Specially Planned Activity Redevelopment Corridors infrastructure initiative.

Ken Juneau, an assistant to Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy, said more than $1.7 million for the project is from the SPARC fund.

The remaining $800,000 or so is from “reprioritization of general capital projects” at the zoo over the past several years.

At the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Public Works Director T.W. Thompson said the project would cost $2.9 million. However, Juneau said the actual amount is slightly more than $2.5 million.

The project will relocate utilities, provide sewer upgrades, relocate and/or rebuild some ca(ges and provide additional animals, including a pair of breeding jaguars for the first time at the city-owned zoo.
