LEARN TO MAKE YOUR OWN
SOLAR PANEL & SOLAR OVEN
March 13-14, 2010 • 9am to 4pm • SARASOTA, FL
In this workshop you will help assemble a 60 Watt photovoltaic (PV) module for producing electricity. We will be making one or more 60 watt modules, which are capable of charging 12 volt batteries and thus are a good start for a RV, cabin, or small home PV system. In the afternoon of the first day and the morning of the second day, we will also make a solar oven using simple, recycled materials. These ovens are designed for the climate and latitude of Florida.
Instructor Richard Komp, PhD, has researched and experimented with solar and other renewable energy technologies for 50 years. His off-the-grid house that he built by himself in Jonesport, Maine, is decked out with photovoltaics, solar thermal hot water and rain water catchments. He hasn't paid electric bills for 21 years. Dr. Komp is the author of several books including Practical Photovoltaics, Revised 2rd Edition, which has been called "the easiest and most complete education on photovoltaics." He is the Director/Co-founder of Skyheat Associates, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting public awareness of the need for energy conservation and solar energy. He is President of Maine Solar Energy Association (www.mainesolar.org ) and Sunwatt Corporation. Dr. Komp spends most of his time as a volunteer to third world countries helping those with no income or electricity to become energy and economically self-sufficient. He has pioneered PV module production as a cottage industry in Nicaragua, Haiti, Peru, Mali, Rwanda, and Pakistan.
Dr. Komp will sell copies of his backyard solar guide The Maine Solar Primer ($10) which illustrates passive solar design, solar water heater, solar oven, and solar food dehydrator. He will discuss adaptations for Florida.
Where: 3407 Gerhardt St, Sarasota 34237
Cost: $120 for 2 days ($80 for 1 day). Lunch, with vegan option, included.
