Big Cat Updates

Keeper Coordinator Notes:

This is from emails shared between Big Cat Rescue Coordinators to make sure things run smoothly at the sanctuary.

We had to throw out a small batch of turkey drums because they went bad.   The bad ones are gone.  Please feel free to use the remaining batches if you are trying to get picky lions to eat in the afternoon.   The bad ones have been completely removed and the remaining batches have been thoroughly checked and are those are fine.  The interns pulled the last bag of chicken drums, so turkey drums can be substituted.

Jade was not feeling well today and vomited a couple times. She was acting kind of puny, so she was separated from her sister all day. She seemed better by PM and kept her food down, so I let them back together. Just keep an eye on her.

Smalls would not eat all day after several attempts. Kewlona ate later before tours on a plate pushed by the den.

Reise is not eating in the morning, but I had the feeding tour take her diet anyways. I told them if she didn't come out to not put the food in so it doesn't attract the birds. She will eat in the afternoon on the bigger cardboard bowl and pushed to the den. She ate well in the evening this way.  I changed her meds around to her getting the Baytril in the PM. I fixed this in the meds cabinet as well.

Sassy is eating well and is eager for breakfast. Like Gale said, be sure to feed and clean her, and Kathryn, Carole, and I will be in this weekend to give her fluids and meds. - Afton

Projects: Gale left a note for the work groups for projects on her Thursday post. Volunteer project is to clear the roof, rake, and clean up the back section of Little Dove's enclosure. I blocked her big cement den and added a raised up tree stump den instead per Gale.

Monday a new company will come out to quote us on setting up LIVE cams in the new Bobcat Rehab area.

 Big Cat Facts

In Alabama, an HSUS-backed bill that would restrict the private possession of big cats and wolves passed the House by a vote of 93-2. A South Carolina bill that would prohibit big cats, bears, and great apes from being kept as pets also passed the House. Alabama and South Carolina are two of five states with no laws governing the keeping of dangerous wild animals as pets (other states with no laws include Nevada, North Carolina, and Wisconsin).  Read more at: HSUS Blog by Wayne Pacelle
