Big Cat Updates

Angie Gabor’s Coordinator Notes for 3/11/2018

WOW!! Today was a very busy day.

The day was nice a cool and the cats were very active. We had lost of regular tours and several private tours.

Lots of sign-offs were done for feeding, enrichment and Operant Conditioning.

We did a segment for El Dodo in Spanish about our Bobcats.

Most of the golf carts were washed and dried. There are still a few left to finish.

We did our meat inventory and I showed the Interns where the information gets logged.

The cats got fresh hay in their dens.  Of course, Keeper Matt came in to put hay in both of Mac Cougar’s dens.

Bobcat Rehab

March 11, 2018:  Just a quick report this morning. Noel was quiet overnight, she napped a lot, but did come out for a bit in between naps. She was still looking up in the tree for the Opossum, lol. She dug around a bit, as usual.

She really seems to love the coolaroo and lounged on it a few times. She did most of her vigorous activity right before dark. She zoomed all over both sides of her enclosure, back and forth, lol. I had a hard time keeping up with her!

It was wonderful to watch her run so fast and hard, since her broken bones have healed. To think she lay there and couldn’t move after being hit by the car, and now she is zooming all over and climbing the walls. Brings happy tears to my eyes. What you do for these cats is beyond amazing and wonderful!

She also had her usual flipping of the rat all over her enclosure, lol. It cracks me up! She really has fun. She also played with the pile of logs in the corner of the side with her platform. She really goes to town playing with those too!

I recorded a video of her reaction to Clover and Lucky last night as they came out and were running around. Noel was lounging on the platform facing them and she watched them intently with her little tail flipping all over. It was so cute! She got very playful after watching them and that’s when she zoomed all over.

I attached some photos I took last night, before it got dark. She posed so beautifully for us. Have a blessed Sunday! Warm wishes, Kristine Metzner

March 12, 2018:   Just a quick Noel report. 🙂 She was very quiet again overnight, napped in her den a lot of the night. She did come out a couple of times to lounge on the platform and wander around to check things out for a short time.

She seems to more active during the early evening hours when it’s still light, than she was at first. She tried to come out again a little while ago, but it started to pour rain, so back in she went.

When she does come out, she still seems curious about everything around her and still looks up in the tree, where the Opossum was, lol. Have a wonderful Monday!  Warm wishes, Kristine Metzner

Wildcat Walkabout March 10, 2018:  Carole takes you on a walk around to the back side of the lakeside enclosures.  See a view of the back side of Seth’s little jungle area, see the lake from the opposite than you are used to seeing.  She then follows keepers, Momma Becky and Sue one the big cat meds route.

Snacks for Beacher, Hutch, & Frosty:  We were streaming live on The Dodo Impact on Facebook.  Operations manager, Kathryn, was giving snacks to African servals, Frosty & Hutch, and a hybrid Savannah cat named Beacher.

Canadian Lynx, Gilligan in 360:  Spring is in the air and the Canada Lynx Gilligan, is telling Skipper next door that he’s the alpha lynx at Big Cat Rescue. You will love the haunting sounds he makes. Note how he keeps stopping to spray urine on a rock, to mark his space. Just one more reason why wildcats belong in the wild and not in our homes.

When NOT to Rescue a Bobcat

When do Big Cat Rescuers NOT rescue a bobcat?

When the bobcat is clearly surviving well on their own. We got a call from a woman who lives on one of the housing peninsulas that reaches out into the bay saying she’d just witnessed a bobcat climbing up a boat dock pole after swimming down the channel for a ways.

She was concerned because she’s 9 houses down from shore and green space. She said the cat looked disgusted, but wasn’t injured, so I told her to keep everyone away and call me this morning if the bobcat was still there. She happily agreed.

We knew the bobcat probably ended up in the water evading kids or dogs, and that he or she would find their way back to their hunting grounds under the cover of darkness last night.

Chasing the bobcat through the neighborhood would just get people all jumpy about the bobcat’s presence. Most people don’t realize what an important public service bobcats provide. This caller noted that her next door neighbor has a huge rat problem, so the bobcat is probably coming and going from this house frequently.

Stay free brave one!
