Big Cat Updates

Smalls Bobcat went home from FunCation.

3/22/17 Sassy was vomiting and refusing to eat much so Dr. Justin came to try one last thing before letting her go.  He gave her fluids and some injections for nausea and then OK’d her going into the outside recovery cage to see if maybe she needs more room to move around to help with her constipation.  Yesterday was the last day of her antibiotics, which can stop her up and make her feel pukey, so now that she’s off them, and has been better hydrated she’ll start feeling better.

3/23/2017 Sassy update:  Dr Justin is coming out again tonight to re assess Sassy Caracal.  We are keeping an eye on her via the Nest Cam and are aware of her breathing heavily.  We have removed the camera from live sharing as we will most likely have to euthanize her when the vet arrives.  She’s 22 and is the oldest Caracal we’ve ever even heard of.  Her health issues are just beyond anything we can improve.  Our hearts are breaking.

3/22/2017 Blood work showed no hope of recovery for Nirvana and she was humanely euthanized.  You can go to her page to leave a comment.  As you can imagine her caretakers are having a really hard time today.

The Picky Boys 3/22/2017

  • TJ:  AM – 5 lbs of turkey & red meat  PM – 7 pounds of turkey, red meat, & pork
  • Hoover:  He did not eat as well as we wanted him to, but he did eat some. AM – 1 pound chicken  LUNCH – 2 pounds   PM – 4 pounds  Keepers tried to get him to eat more.
  • Cameron:  AM – 2 pounds PM – 5 pounds  Keepers tried other times throughout the day to get him to eat but he made it quite plain he was not hungry.
  • Zeus:  AM – 4 pounds 10 ounces   PM – 5 pounds His favorites today was red meat, chicken, and pork
  • Joseph:  Almost 7 pounds

When animals, including humans, get old we lose muscle mass.  Our skin sags, our bones protrude and our gait slows.  We lose our teeth and our appetites.  The same thing happens with these old cats.  Our keepers work tirelessly getting the picky old cats to eat.  We purchase all different kinds of meats and keepers cut the meat in different sizes, we try to do whatever it takes to get them to eat.  It is so frustrating to want them to eat more and watch them say “NO WAY, I’m done.”

 Cats On The Move

Cameron and Zabu are scheduled to go on vacation tomorrow.

Armani and Jade are scheduled for Funcation.

Both cages may need to be mowed.

Keisha’s cage needs to be checked for stuff on the roof and raking.

 Coordinator Notes 3/22/2017

Roof was patched in Ginger’s old cage.
Old Platform taken out of Ginger’s new cage and dirt put in the platform under the den.
Meat truck arrived bringing red meat and pork.  It was unloaded, cataloged and neatly stored in the walk-in freezer.
Shelves in front of freezer are for the freezer, space is made on the right side.
Food prep floor was professionally scrubbed, it looks amazing!

Sassy Caracal still not eating well. Dr Justin came out and gave injections to see if we can get her eating.  He also gave her fluids. He wants to try putting her in the big recovery cage outside to see if she will perk up being outside.

Picky cats did well.
Joseph ate almost 7 lbs in the morning from his lockout. Please make sure he gets at least 10 lbs of assorted meats in the morning. It is written on the special diet board in food prep.
Cameron ate well, he ate pork, chicken thighs and chicken drum. (Thankfully I didn’t have to pull out a whole chicken or organic grd beef b/c I didn’t have those 🙂 )
TJ did great today he ate about 12 lbs, he really likes turkey but also ate red and pork. I took out an extra whole turkey so he could have the boneless meat off it.
Zeus did ok, he was in a chicken mood today.

Rescue Team Still on the Road

The Big Cat Rescue Team is still ON THE ROAD to RESCUE CATS!

Rescuers: Jamie, Afton, Alyssa, & Lauren G.

March 23, 2017 – Big Cat Rescuers have just gotten on the road with 2 adult bobcats rescued from The Mobile Zoo in Alabama. Officers with Mobile County (Alabama) Animal Control seized the bobcats and other remaining animals from the zoo this morning in a secret raid.

We could not give you details about this rescue until Jamie and Afton, and the other rescuers, were safely on the highway leaving Alabama with these precious bobcats. The bobcats will arrive at their forever home at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa this evening. Our team is also on the ground at the sanctuary readying their new spacious enclosure.

We don’t know a lot about these bobcats. We’re told they are both four years old; one is male and the other is female. They have been living in the same cage at the Mobile Zoo.

The male bobcat’s name is Lakota and the female bobcat’s name is Souix.

Meet female bobcat, Sioux

Meet male bobcat, Lakota

We do know quite a bit about the sordid history of the Mobile Zoo and its owner. The Mobile Zoo was shut down and its license revoked by USDA in November 2016. Earlier this week (March 16, 2017) the owner of the zoo, John Marks Hightower, was arrested on 28 counts of animal cruelty. The Mobile County District Attorney’s office filed charges after a search warrant was served at the zoo and Mobile County Animal Control and veterinarians assessed the condition of the animals remaining at the facility.

The Mobile Zoo, located in Wilmer, Alabama, was closed and its license revoked by USDA last November after numerous complaints of animals being mistreated. The most recent inspection found cages with dried feces, an accumulation of pests in the animal enclosures, unstable den conditions and possible blood stains that were never cleaned up.

At its peak, the zoo housed more than 75 animals, ranging from bears, to tigers and lions as well as monkeys and birds. USDA had repeatedly cited the zoo for rotted food in a refrigerator that had maintenance issues, and rotted meat in the enclosures with the lions and tigers. Since Hightower owned the animals, not all of them were immediately seized and taken, but his arrest this week signaled that the investigation into the facility found conditions were not adequately improved for Hightower to keep the animals.

Can we count on you to help us fund the rescue of these 2 bobcats and their ongoing care at Big Cat Rescue? This is your chance to REALLY make a difference in the lives of these precious wild cats! It’s because of wonderful donors like YOU that we can continue to rescue and provide a permanent home for exotic cats. Thank you!

 Meet Kathryn

Kathryn is the Director of Donor Appreciation.  She has been a volunteer at Big Cat Rescue since 2001. She has also held 2 different staff positions: Education Director 2003 to 2005 and Intern Manager/Donations Manager 2008 to 2009. She had to leave in 2009 to follow her husband’s job to Washington DC.

She returned in 2011 and worked her way back up to Senior Keeper. She is often seen convincing cats to take their medication and enjoys working on the Operant Conditioning committee. She is passionate about the benefits this provides the cats and keepers.

Kathryn has a BS in Finance from the University of Florida and is an avid Gator fan!

Kathryn is involved outside of BCR in helping other sanctuaries. She is a relief keeper at another large big cat sanctuary. She served as interim director in Ethiopia at a big cat sanctuary in 2015. She also regularly visits other sanctuaries in Florida to assist in cage design and building.

She is energetic, enthusiastic, and very in tune to the cats.  She is one that even the picky cats will usually eat for.

Cheetaro Leopard has “Chosen” Kathryn as his special keeper.  He will do things for her that he won’t do for any one else.

I remember, back on the summer of 2006 I wanted a photo of Cheetaro in his tree.  Ten days, TEN DAYS in a row I went to his enclosure a dozen times a day trying to catch him in his tree.  Finally, the last day about just before leaving the sanctuary to head for the airport to go home Kathryn made a special trip to run me by Cheetaro’s enclosure.  WOW…. as soon as she walked up to his enclosure and said something to him he RAN to his tree and leaped up there, turned around and looked down on us.  LOL, I was so amazed, completely frozen.  It felt like time stopped.  Like an idiot I just stood there staring at him in complete wonder.  Then he leaped down and ran straight back to Kathryn.  GRRRRRR, it then dawned on me I forgot to take the stupid photo!!!

 3/22/17 Nirvana’s Last Day

(Photo of Nirvana from 2013)

Nirvana was so happy to be done with her eye drops and back out in her Cat-a-Tat, but within a couple of days she stopped eating.  No amount of coaxing could get her to eat.

She was active in the evenings, and drinking a lot, but when the Keepers would try to feed her she acted like everything offered tasted bad.

The evening of 3/22/2017 Dr. Justin came out to run her blood work again and her kidney levels had increased so dramatically that it was clearly her time to go.  We gathered around and helped ease her across that Rainbow Bridge.

As you can imagine, last night and today there are many of us in tears.  Even though we know she was so old and there was nothing more we could do, letting her go is still so hard.

If you ever spent more than a few minutes with Nirvana, you have a “Nirvana story.”  Tell us yours in the comments to let her know that you remembered her for the little comedian in soft fuzzy pajamas that she was.

Note To Viewers:  If Nirvana held a special place in your heart, feel free to email to ask for a photo of Nirvana that you can print.

Question for Viewers:  I have started a digital book about Nirvana and it is almost finished.  It will be in three formats, Kindle, iBooks, & PDF.  Would any of you still be interested in having that?

 Christmas In March? THANK YOU!!!

SOOOOOO  EXCITING!!!!!!!!  Amazon Wishlist items arrived!!!

With around 88 volunteers and up to 20 interns we go through quite a lot of snacks, coffee, & tea.  They work so hard, always with a smile on their faces and a spring in their step that when they come inside for a short break they kind of collapse.  Seeing treats for them arrive in the mail is truly touching!!  THANK YOU, Everyone for thinking out the volunteers and interns.  Your gifts for them, your kindness, has really been encouraging and uplifting for them.

Most of the time boxes from our Amazon Wish List do not tell us who they are from, meaning most of the time we do not know who that send a thank you to.  If you send things from our Amazon Wish List, PLEASE drop us a note or message letting us know so we can send out thank you notes.

Sweet little Nirvana… I hadn’t seen you in months but watched you on the hospital cameras whenever they were on… I was excited when you came back outside and hoped we’d see your 23rd birthday in June but yesterday when you didn’t take your meds or come out of your den to eat… my heart sank ❤️now you can run free sweet girl ??  ~Keeper Brittany M

You will be missed Nirvana. I remember how you used to hide in the bushes in your old enclosure where Breezy is now and jump out at me on Saturday mornings to play. Every time I would see you with your Elvis ? stiff upper lip I would chuckle. You made more of an impact on me then you will ever know. Rest in peace wild child. ~Keeper Mark M
