Big Cat Updates

Sabre, a 25 yr old black leopard, had a rough couple of days.  Day before yesterday he did not eat much and yesterday morning he wasn’t feeling well.  By afternoon he was resting comfortably.

Nirvana’s enclosure is being spruced up and we are thinking about adding it to PurrFection’s enclosure to give her additional space.  It is so hard walking by Nirvana’s enclosure and not seeing her in there.

Sioux is a rather small bobcat.  After the new cats have had some time to settle in, we will get some new photos for you.  Right now, we are trying to give them as much peace, quiet, and space as we can to allow them to get comfortable with their new surroundings and time to learn the daily routine like when the cleaning is done, when the food cart comes, etc.

Lakota and Sioux are settling in.  They have thoroughly marked everything in their enclosures, have tried out the platforms, peed on the toys, spied on their neighbors, found all the good naping spots, tested all the good sunny napping spots, located and used all the great hiding spots, used the dens, and have also climbed the trees, etc.

Gilligan:  After he ate the rest of his food he decided it was more fun to scatter his leftover mush around his enclosure that it was to eat it.

Arthur is acting normal but for some reason he ate slowly today and left a few small pieces.

Zeus ate a good breakfast.

Keisha ate a small breakfast but then ate a good lunch.

3/25/17 Saturday Angie’s Coordinator Report:

The Picky Eaters

TJ did excellent today.  He ate a little over 12 lbs of mostly turkey plus some pork and red meat.
Joseph ate 6lbs of red and chicken
Cameron did not do as well.  He ate a turkey drum in the am and 2.10 lbs of turkey thighs in the PM
Hoover ate 7.14 lbs of mostly chicken.  He was more interested in chasing me or Gabby or Priya or Keisha.  He is such a flirt.
Zeus ate a little over 10 lbs today. I was able to get drops in his right eye in the am, but he refused to let me get anywhere near his eyes in the PM.

In other news

Saber threw up his meds in the am and then kept throwing up bile and dry heaving for about 15 min.  He ate his entire diet around 10 am and was fine the rest of the day.  I think he bit into his pill in the morning and didn’t like it very much.

We got poop samples for Lakota, Sioux and Pharaoh.

Ana was screaming very loudly multiple times today, but they were both fine each time we checked on them.  (She’s acting like she’s in heat.  Good thing Will is fixed.)

New Cats

Lakota ate 15 oz of chicken, red meat, and mush. Neither one ate the rat.
Sioux did not come out of the den at all today.  Didn’t eat any of the food offered.  She was offered food 3 times today and each time it was left out for about an hour.

That’s all folks! Angie

 People Often Ask

People Often Ask:  “How many cats do you have?  Where do they come from?”

The number of cats here changes as older cats cross the Rainbow Bridge and as new cats arrive.

You can always stay current on what cats are here by going to BigCatRescue.org/catbio/

  • If you click on the little play button a short summary of each cat’s story will be read to you.
  • If you click directly on each cat’s name you will be taken to a page for each cat giving a more detailed story about them.

 BigCatTV.com

This video is from 2016 but is one that should be shared and passed on now, as well.

1.  If you’d like to post this on YOUR Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, G+, Tumblr or other social media accounts, here is the link you can use to do that:  https://youtu.be/lD84ufpwZQs

2.  If you have a blog or website you’d like to share this video on, here is the embed code to do that.  <iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/lD84ufpwZQs” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Any, circulation you can give this video would be greatly appreciated.  People often say they wish they could donate.  Did you know there are many other ways to help the cats?  One of those ways is by sharing the videos from our two YouTube channels. Every time someone share those videos and someone new watches the cats actually make a few cents from the google ads on the videos.  It really adds up.

 Big Cat Challenge

Here is a “Just For Fun” video.  It is a very short video that YOUR FRIENDS would probably enjoy.

Here are the links to both of our YouTube channels:

  1. BigCatTV.com is the shortcut to our main YouTube channel at YouTube.com/bigcatrescue This is the channel Brian, Chris, and now Afton’s videos are put on.
  2. YouTube.com/DailyBigCat is the channel Carole’s videos get put on and the channel the short clips get put on, as well.

Note To Viewers:  Under each video, on both of those channels, is a “Share” link.  If you click on it a menu of icons opens. There is an icon for G+, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Pinterest etc.  If you click on the icons for whatever social media channels you, purr-sonally use it will allow you to share our videos right on you own social media pages.  Then when your friends watch them YOU are actually raising money for the cats!!!!!!!  If you shared one video every day, by the end of the year you would have really helped to raise money for the cats.

IF YOU do this and would like us to come Like & Comment on your post let us know by emailing us, tagging us, messaging us, or by sharing your post on our page at Facebook.com/BigCatRescue and we’d be happy to do that.

 Big Cat Facts – Lion

Of the known sub-species of lion there seems to be an agreement on 2 as far as genetics go – Pantherinae Panthera leo leo – the African lion, and Pantherinae Panthera leo persica – the Asian lion. Regardless of the area of Africa a lion is found in today, their DNA analysis has shown them to be the same, whereas there is a difference between African and Asian. As of the time of this writing, the Barbary lion has never been tested and compared to these results, and may in fact be a third and distinct lion sub-species.

 Keeper Corner

Oh, silly Sassy girl… you were my sweetest nemesis at feeding time, always swatting the food away like a tennis player and shaking out of excitement. The only reason this doesn’t hurt as much is knowing that now you are with Rusty boy again ??I will miss not having caracals at BCR. ~Keeper Brittany M

Dear, sweet Nirvana. I will miss your adorable “grin”, your grumpy rumble and our discussions about whether or not you’ll take your meds. Run free, beautiful angel. ~Keeper Karma
