Big Cat Updates

Coordinator Report Monday, May 15, 2017

20 yr old Andi & 22 yr old Apache both had vet visits Monday and are in the recovery hospital.

Apache had dental work done and is now on soft food permanently. His pieces need to be cut up really small as he cannot chew.

Andi’s cage was cleaned and top soil added. We still need to add some additional top soil and grass seed. Intern Aleesa led the project with other interns and 2 red shirts.

Picky cats ate well.

  • Cameron was still on turkey drums and ckn thighs
  • TJ Turkey and Red.

The keepers watered all of the cages that had top soil and grass seed added over the past few days while cleaning.

Nova is the first bobcat to live in our new rehab enclosures. Let’s check in on how she is doing!

Letter To Management

May 15, 2017

Dear Sir/Madam:

Well, it’s apparent that you will let anyone visit here now.

Obviously more stringent controls need to be put in place.

Some of the Explore stalkers were here this weekend and – get this – they sang to me. Now, I like music and I like being sung to. HOWEVER, they sung Soft Kitty. SOFT KITTY! DO I LOOK LIKE A SOFT KITTY? I would have been very impressed had they sung The Lion Sleeps Tonight, or any song from The Lion King …. but Soft Kitty? Harumph.

Knowing they were from out of town and traveled very far to be here, I did grace them with a roar to thank them — but I did not feel the need to get up from my platform to do so. Next time, they will know better. It’s so hard being the King and training my subjects. Sigh.

Featured Big Cat – Little Dove

Little Dove is 24 years old.  She is a fur farm survivor.

Date of Birth:  5/12/1993

Date of Rescue:  5/27/1993

Little Dove came with the original group of 56 who were rescued from a fur farm by Big Cat Rescue. She is a “Blue” Bobcat and turns silver in the winter. Although she was raised along side Little Feather and Raindance, two of our friendliest Bobcats, she has never been very trusting of humans and remains quite shy.

She now has a 2400 square foot Cat-A-Tat all to herself. When she was younger one of the cats she lived with mistakenly bit her eye while playing. It has healed completely and her vision is fine, however her eye is two colors, divided directly down the center, one side is golden and the other side is dark brown.

Here is a short video of her when she was 22 years old.

Here is another short video that has her in it.  This video is from 2010.

Happy Birthday, Little Dove

S.A.V.E Award

For outstanding volunteer service, the November 2016 SAVE Award went to Becky Gagliardo! Becky is a true Big Cat Rescue veteran. She has dedicated herself to the care of the cats for 17 years and gives 100% at all times. Becky is very hard working and makes sure that every cat feels special and has a full belly! We are so happy to honor such a wonderful lady in this special way.

To celebrate a $1,000 donation was given to the Wildlife Conservation & Ecology Lab at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak & Small Wild Cat Conservation Foundation to conserve the Flat Headed Cat, Leopard Cat and Marbled Cat.

There are only five species of cats in Borneo but little is known on their exact occurrence and their habitats are increasingly being reduced for oil palm and other land use. The Ulu Sebuyau National Park in Sarawak in Malaysia has an area totaling 18,287 ha, consisting primarily of peat swamp forest. The National park is currently not open to visitors as it has no infrastructure and is located far from human settlements but is a prime research spot for these small cat species.

Dr Mohd-Azlan J. Azad and his team have set infrared sensored cameras in Ulu Sebuyau National Park to investigate the ecology of, in particular, the Flat-Headed Cat . Camera trapping in this area started in late 2015, and to date 1314 camera captures have assisted in documenting carnivore occurrences and understanding habitat preferences in this protected habitat. Species recorded have included Binturong, Banded Linsang, Leopard Cat, Marbled Cat and the rare and Endangered Flat-Headed Cat.

The next phase of the project started in 2016, is to add more camera traps over a wider distribution of forest to increase data collection and improve understanding of the ecological needs of the species.
