Big Cat Updates
Sky, Rehab Bobcat Report: Jamie said no more remote photos of Sky and kittens, so she thinks they have found a new den site which is a natural and good thing.
We just got Cinder‘s fecal reports back from IDEXX and she is positive for hookworm eggs, but not antigens.
Tanya is filming vet procedures in 3D today. That is going to be some amazing video!
We want to THANK ALL the partner volunteers who work in the gift shop and give tours. Each and every one of you is a vital part of Big Cat Rescue!!!
While one team was in the hospital treating cats another team was taking care of the cats who were recovering, another team was running the gift shop and tours, another was cleaning and doing maintenance, another was doing cat care such as feeding, cleaning, med, enrichment, operant conditioning, etc. It was a very very busy day.
Cats that saw the dentist today:
If any of these had been an emergency he would have come right away, but none of the cats were acting as if it bothered them much. They’ve just been on our list to take care of before it got worse.
- Frankie Bobcat – 23.2 pounds, Dental 3 root canals
- Alpha Bobcat – 11 pounds, Dental 1 molar extracted and we will re Xray her canine in 4 weeks.
- Sapphire Tiger – 284 pounds, Dental 2 incisors extracted and a mass removed from her forehead to be sent out for testing.
Cats See Dentist
Dr. Wade Gingerich is our guest dentist today. It was so awesome that he spoke out loud for all of us to hear. Dr. Wade Gingerich comes up from Miami to do this for free, so we try to arrange as many as we can in one day.

Coordinator Report
Today was a great day! We were lean, but we were a machine!!! Thank you to all of the amazing volunteers that came in today and helped take care of the cats.
We had lots of sign-offs today, feeding, cleaning and tours.
Many many thanks to Dr. Justin, Dr. Gingerich and Dr. Lacroix for coming in and spending the entire day treating our cats. They did 3 root canals on Frankie Bobcat, pulled one tooth from Alpha Bobcat and removed 2 incisors and a mass from Sapphire. We really appreciate your work and your time.

The first cat up today was Frankie, a male bobcat whose approx date of birth is 1/1/2006. He arrived at Big Cat Rescue on 6/14/2018. Root canals by Dr. Wade Gingerich and Dr. Justin Boorstein. Dr. Gingerich said that little Frankie Bobcat’s 3 root canals would have been $3,000.

Alpha Bobcat had a tooth growing in sideways that has to be rechecked or pulled before she can be released. Alpha arrived last August with a broken jaw. Dr. Justin fixed it but noted she had this weird tooth issue right before it was time to release her, so we waited until an expert could be called in today to address it.

Sapphire Tiger is the next up to see the dentist. We think Sapphire was born in 2010 but she had been seized from people who didn’t care about her and didn’t let us know anything about her background. She was here in Witness Protection for four years.
She was barely showing anything other than a preference to chew on one side, but they found she has an old break in her jaw that makes her chew lopsided. It looks like she had a broken jaw as a cub that healed poorly. Keepers thought she winced on the left side, but the damage is actually on the right and up front.

Sapphire the white tiger has a mass right in the middle of her forehead that Dr. Justin Boorstein is cutting off and sending out for testing.
A few Q & As from the video comments
Will the cats get antibiotics or pain meds? Any time a cat has any sort of infection or surgery they get antibiotics and pain meds.
What is a root canal? Root canal therapy is an endodontic procedure. It is the treatment of the internal aspect of the cat’s tooth, called the root canal. A less invasive procedure and easier for the cat! An initial endodontic file is used to evaluate the root canal. Endodontic files are used to remove the infected pulp. After a human has a root canal they get a crown for the tooth. What about the cat? The sealant on the teeth is called Guttaflow
Do cats get dry socket? The vets sew up the gum so that should help prevent dry sockets, I think.
How old is Sapphire Tiger? We think she was born in 2010 but her owner didn’t care enough about her to give us any info. We had to try to figure it out but what info we could gather and what little info ODA had available.

With your help and thanks to a coalition of groups coming together, we defeated two horrible bills in Missouri – HB951 and HB559!
HB 951 would have prevented local authorities, such as animal control officials, from inspecting roadside zoos and circuses, even if there were reports of abuse or neglect.
HB559 would have prevented municipalities in the state from banning circuses that use animals from performing in their city and would have nullified any existing local bans.
There were and still are dozens of bills moving through state legislatures that impact wild and exotics cats, but stopping these bad bills in Missouri was a top priority this legislative season and WE DID IT!
